How do I replace a ML II SAVAGE MUZZLELOADER BARREL? I picked up a used one that has the breech plug seized in the barrel with no way to break it loose. Where can I get a new barrel that uses the standard 209 primers.

If you get a barrel wrench from Wheeler or others you can remove the barrel nut. Then I have used the appropriate sized hole in hardwood to place around the barrel when clamped to remove the barrel. Sometimes they are on really tight from the factory. Then some modest heat or penetrating oil will get the breech plug out.

Have done all that including drilling and tapping for a reverse screw remover. Still won’t budge. Literally broke a crescent wrench trying to get it to break loose. Just gonna scrap it and move to a 45 caliber barrel if I can find a replacement at a reasonable price. Thanks for any input.

It’s an ML-II without the accutrigger and has the old breech plug that requires something with 4 teeth to go into it to get leverage to remove. I’ve sheered off all the teeth on what once was a tool for it.

You can make another one out of a old socket. Use WD40 or vinegar on the breech plug and if you make a scocket tool you can use a small impact on it. You can heat the barrel a little too but not too much.

I'd get a new breech plug with a carbide bushing from Luke and contact McGowen to install the breech plug in one of their barrels and put it all on your action. I went this route with a 700ML in 40 cal

Do yourself a favor ... get a PacNor .45 cal barrel and never look back ! Even with a Savage plug , 209 primers and sabots sub inch groups are the norm .

For one of the best penetrating oils. A mix of 50/50 ATF and Acetone, use any ATF that isnt too expensive. You can mix it in small amounts to what you need.

I got .45 barrels from both companies and have been pleased with both. Unfortunately, PacNor had a fire which destroyed their facility. They have rebuilt, but I no longer see offers for 10MLII barrels. Might be worth it to give PacNor a call. 541-469-7330 A carbide bushing is a fantastic suggestion. It gets rid of one big headache. And I wouldn't hesitate ordering from McGowen. Their accuracy is equal to that of PacNor.

I only mentioned McGowen because of positive personal SML experience. I do remember a few years back a lot of guys were getting PacNor barrels for their SMLs ad there were many glowing reviews.

Out of curiosity, I emailed PacNor enquiring if they would produce barrels for the 10MLII. This was the reply:
Dan,
Not right now. Maybe by the end of the year.
