Long time shooter/reloader but new to smokeless. I have an Arrowhead smokeless MGM .45 cal Encore barrel on Encore frame. I have been doing great with Arrowhead 275 gr 45cal Bullets, 60 gr IMR4198 and LRM primers.
I am getting low on magnum primers and wanted to develope a lower recoil load for my grandson. Yesterday I tried 250 gr Hornady FTX, 60gr IMR4198 and standard large rifle primers. Bullets were sized to load with moderate force. No wad.
First and only load sounded like a 22LR. Minimum recoil. Checked and bullet had exited barrel.
I have a few ideas on what went wrong but wanted to check with some more experienced shooter before I do something unsafe. I do have wool and veggie wads arriving tomorrow.
Thanks, Chris

Welcome to the board, fellow gramps! The wads may or may not help. If not, how do you feel about duplexing? Using regular primers, that may be a good option. Using VV N110 as a primer powder (under the main charge), I have never had a failure to fire. Others have used 4759 (discontinued) as a primer powder.

Duplex loads interest me but I can't seem to find a suitable primer powder available locally. Thanks, Chris

How about Green Dot? I use it also, but no more than 5 grains.

I don't have any Green Dot. Is there a list or data available on what powders work for duplex loads?
I have several powders on hand. Chris

The most common have been 4759 (discontinued production), VV110 (overall best) and 5744. Generally 10 g . Yes, the faster powders in lower amounts work well but erode the VLs/bushings quickly.
Generally, short rod powders work best. Make sure the powder granules will not make it through a ventliner/bushing.

Thanks guys. Some good info. I missed the Load info section.
My question know is there any danger in going forward with the 4198 and standard primers and seeing if the wads help?
Mayby more or less powder?
Knurl bullet?
Size bullet a bit tighter in bore?
Thanks, Chris
