Good afternoon,
First off, I've been using and experimenting with these SMLs for a long time. I'm ashamed to say how many I own at this time. I am having an issue with a normally reliable 700ml with a McGowen barrel. This rifle has always been one of my favorites, shooting 68 gr H4198, a dry wool wad, Federal 209s and 290 TEZs with a slight knurl. No sizing needed. Have been shooting this gun for quite a few years. This year I am having issues with fails to fire. Kinda stumped. Tried new jug of H4198, IMR4198, different primers. I have even dropped the powder load to 62 gr to shoot a saboted fury bullet. Doesn't seem to matter. It will fire the first time or two and then a FTF. It has a bushing plug which I have cleaned and checked. The hole in the bushing measures .034 to .035. Any thoughts from you guys?

I have a 700cf action with a.50 barrel and lmrp modules from Cecil and the first attempt to shoot it with h4198 and 300xtp in a black sabot didn't light either, primer pushed the whole power column and bullet halfway down barrel. I ended up using 5744 powder, then tried fury universal fit 285g. Those gave great groups

What different primers have you tried? Has the primer actually fired on a FTF? If so, was the bullet seated firmly on powder before and after the FTF? Carbon drilled out of the breech plug? Bushing hole at .035 shouldn't be the problem.
These are the basic problems with a FTF that you probably have already checked but it helps others to know this before being able to advise you from there.

This is an interesting dilemma. Have you checked the firing pin indent on the primers? How I see how the ignition system works is that the primer requires a good strike to release a reasonably strong thermal energy that is regulated through a pathway to the powder. A weak primer strike will not release strong thermal energy that may be insufficient to ignite the powder. This can be seen with a Savage 10ML-II if the bolt handle is not in the fully down position. Other than that, I don’t know what else to suggest for a cause.

Good Advice Given. One other item on the Rem 700 ML is if the Bolt Retention Screw is Worn Out (Flat Spot) it can change your Headspace.

Thanks for the replies. Primers seem to be firing properly. When FTF happens, load does not leave the barrel. Moves 1/2 to 3/4 up the barrel. I installed a new BP that I had Pete make for me years ago but haven't shot yet. Are replacement bolt retention screws still available?

I think the new BP and retention screw may end your problem. Keep us posted. Helped mine out with a similar problem. Also took the bolt apart and cleaned it and the firing pin.

What do the Primers look like? If they are dirty, you are getting blowback. PM me your address and I will send you a couple of Retention Screws to see if it corrects the issue.
I would replace the bushing also or try another breechplug like you mentioned.

You might want to try knurling the Barnes bullets between 2 Bastard files also. 1 roll might be sufficient.
