Good morning, it has been quite some time since my last post. I have been looking all over online and in store for Federal 209 shotshell primers with no luck. Currently I am down to 3 left for the remainder of the season. Does anyone know of a safe reliable place to order from?
I ordered Winchester 209 777 primers out of desperation, but it seems after doing some research here that was a total waste of money.
I also "ordered" some from an online website only to realize after, that it was a complete scam.

Bowhuter,
If you want to make a road trip I can help you but I am in Western NYS. I scored 1000 in the spring and already had 400 on hand. I've been using 10-20 per year and don't see that changing anytime soon. If you are in the area or have a friend who is, I'll PM my address and hook you up with a few hundred.

Thank you everyone. I actually found 3 packs of the CCI Magnum shotshell 209 primers (the exact ones I have always used) listed for sale on Gunbroker. Paid an arm and a leg for them. But at least im good now for a while. Does anyone know what these retailed for? I don't know what the guys margin is, but $65.00/100 seems steep!

CCI Mag & Win 209 will do virtually the same as Fed209As. What they won’t do is foul your BP as much. I doubt that you’ll notice much performance difference. As you obviously have learned, 209s for use with BP subs are not to be used with smokeless powder.

The NEW Federal 209s at Walmart are not the same as the old Federal 209 ML primers. They appear to be much hotter.

What kind is supposed to be used for for smokeless?I have used all kinds of 209 primers and they seem to work just fine.I have a Knight mountaineer with a 45 cal brux with 26'' barrel.Do different primers make that much difference?

MLing primers went from #11 caps, to musket primers(larger/hotter), to special low energy 209 primers that were specifically designed for BP subs and then , for smokeless, to full strength shotgun shell primers . My understanding is that the amount of difference between the Fed 209A and the Rem 209 muzzleloading primer is about 4x as far as strength.
The CCIm, Chedder, Win 209s are nearly as strong as the Fed209A but are much cleaner. Toby and I tested these and decided that the Win was highly satisfactory and it was used for 99% of the 10ML and 10 ML2 testing. 5744, VV110 and 4759 are very easy to ignite, and any standard or magnum 209 will work well. Next down the ladder is 4198 which can a bit more difficult to ignite in cold temps as can VV120. H4198 works wonderfully when duplexed with any of those 1st 3 powders. Ironically, VV120 does not work well at all when duplexed. A whole bunch of us found that out when the velocity of our 2720’/sec load of 10/60 110/120 loads at 70F dropped to < 2,000 during the extreme cold spell in 2002 when temps in Arkansas and other states dropped to 0+/- F for weeks on end.
I have 1 remaining 209 ignited rifle, a 10ML/40 PN. My load is 6/65 VV110/Varget 225g Pittman AM. That load works well for me but is not a recommendation. I use Win or CCIm or just CCI 209s. .

Concerning the primers, using a moderately loose load (sabot or two finger pushdown) , a high pressure 209 can move the load down slightly and actually reduce the max chamber pressure. Burn rates of BP/subs are quite different than smokeless powders. In the many 1,000s of shots testing the 10ML and ML2 and later on with 45s and 40 cal barrels, I found very little velocity difference between primers using 50 cal and A2400, 5744, 4759 and VV110. Moderate differences with 4198, 2015, VV120 and H4227. For duplex 4198 loads, also very little difference. Velocity extreme differences (ES) were better with CCI and Win 209, inbetween was CCIM (likely, my favorite overall) and worst with Fed209A. This is with cleaned out BPs. With highly carboned BPs, the differences were minor. I like the cleanliness of CCI, CCIm and Win 209.
