Hey everyone just had another 45 MZ built by McGowen with # 5 contour , it's super light, maybe to much .Barrel is 24 long with first 4 inches 1.2 I think, and .700 at muzzle,, Is anyone shooting that contour?? What loads would I be safe with? I'm thinking 70 grains N120 with 195 Barnes or 200 sst ? As max for them ?? Thanks for your help

It sounds similar to the DMB-1 (Doug's Message Board) contour to me. I need to find the spreadsheet with all the measurements on to confirm.

60 gr of N120 is a better choice with those 2 bullets.

I have McGowen DMB-1 barrels. They are all good shooters with either the Barnes 250 gr or 290 gr TEZs. I never shot sabots out of any of them.

Hankins has 2 guys he says hunts with totally sporter #5 Brux contour 45s in the mtns out west . They use 275gr land riders with 70gr of 4198 . Thats gotta kick pretty good carbon stocked . I dont see why its not possible though id probably shoot something lighter loaded without a brake like those are . Just pay attention to what your doing loading is all . Cant say i blame you looking for lighter weight , in fact Ive got a 416 ready for machineing thats on a 5.5 Wilson sporter too . If you are gonna shoot a bit further like 300yds++ maybe a bit sleeker 225 or Fury 240 ot may do you better for that in a sabot without alot of extra kick . The bc increase would be helpfull , even loaded lighter than 60gr of N120 . The extra bc would be worth that trade off as those 40 bullets equal a 50gr heavier 45s bc . Id try 57gr of 4198 i think or there abouts . A harvester Lt blue will handle that just fine .

60gr of N120 will be about max before you start trashing sabots. Thats about 2800fps load with a 200gr in a sabot. I was breaking 2700fps with 58gr IIRC. 209 primer, Pacnor 45 1-22 27" small shank.

My McGowen DMB-1 measures 0.855" at the muzzle. My Pacnor Modified Sendro measures 0.840" at the muzzle.

Per the chart that Luke at ASG complied years ago, that would be a #6 contour. It tapers quicker than a DMB-1. The shanks are the dame dimension.

I dont know of this DMB chart but its much different than others out there by muzzle dimensions alone . Just sayin.......

You can let Luke at ASG know that he does not know how to measure barrel taper as he complied the chart. My dimensions match his pretty close for my 2 barrels.

Practically every manufacter of barrels has a difference in those dimmensions by a little bit on std contours . No big deal . What im saying is thats not a #6 muzzle . Whose error ?? Dont matter . Thats not a #6 by the guys that make them . 100 thou is way off . I would hope if somebody Wanted a #6 or whatever contour theyd see what the Maker says they are for Their barrels . No matter who says what Thats what youll get . Just Sayin.......

GMB54-120. Thanks for posting that,, I had been shooting 60 grains in my other 45 and it done great,, but I'm about out of N120 and can't find any .. also I was reading some of Richards load and that's where I got 70 grains from.. But this current 45 has a 24 inch barrel on it and I was thinking of little more powder to get my speed back or help it a little bit, was thinking of putting a veggie wad behind Sabo going TRY 195 Barnes and 200sst ,, but more than likely will be using a 250 and sizing die, just hard go back,,,

VAbuckhunter,
I just got my 700ml back from McGowan, I had them barrel mine a little on the heavier and longer side. I have in the process of breaking the barrel in, I have 2 pounds of n120 I was able to pick up locally I am new to the whole smokeless game and sizing the bullets for bore riders. I have started at 55 grains. Any advice for this barrel/powder combo I'm all ears.

I have a stevens 200 with a 45cal McGowan barrel and I use the Barnes 250gr and 290gr TEZ. No sizing at all.451 bullets fit the .450 bore just right. But I like to use a lubed wad over 69grs of IMR4198 with a Win209. I bought mine from Luke and used the Savage 209 carbide vent liner.
