Hello, Everyone. My factory Savage is grouping 325 FTX @ 10" and the Barnes 300SSP @ 7" !!! At 100 yds. both at 1". I've covered all the basics so its the loads at issue here. Using 63 Grs RL7 @ 2,200 FPS. What are your thoughts? Thanks

I’m going to take a long shot guess here. Your front sling screw is getting bumped with your 200yd rest setup.

Is this happening on the same range day? 1"inch groups at 100 with no load variation should not equate to 7 - 10" at 200. Are you giving the barrel ample time to cool when it is this hot outside, heat kills accuracy with sabots. Are you shooting the 100 first and then going to 200? If so reverse it and see what happens. I believe your issue is barrel heat assuming your breech plug has been properly cleaned and your vent liner is within specs.

always worth checking in the future. Is it possible that the twist is not stabilizing the bullets as the velocity decreases?

Barell cold between shots. plug and vent liner clean and to specs. you are correct, it shouldn't do that....

Concise article. My ML2 has 1-24" twist rate so that should stabilize the 300-325 grain bullets. just need to hit the range again....

What sabots do you use? I would give your barrel a good cleaning too. I just shot my 10ML-ll at 8;30 this morning and my 45cal Stevens 200. I shot both guns at 200yds the 10ML-ll was 69gr of IMR4198 a .458 300gr Hornady in a BCR sabot with a Win 209. I hit about 3" to the left of the bullseye it was zeroed for 200yds. And I shot my 45cal Stevens 200 with 69gr of IMR4198 and a .451 Barnes TEZ with a lubed wool wad and a Win 209. And it hit about 3" to the right both shots were cold bore shots and both level with the bullseye too.

Oh I do Cuda. Butches and JB. I run an alcohol patch after each shot, then a dry patch. I use BCR sabot. How do you like the TEZ?

Powderfinger
For what it’s worth I use a slightly different approach between shots. I dry swab between shots and after 4-5 shots use a wire brush on my bore. Dry swab after wire brushing. No wet patching as I didn’t find it beneficial in my case. Also keep in mind that if a barrel is cool to a touch doesn’t mean the bore is cool. When a shot is fired the bore temp increases by 3.5-4F. Fire 3 or 4 consecutive shots bore temp increases close to 16F and you may not feel it on the outside. So cooling time between shots is important for consistency of shots.
Hopefully something useful has been expressed here.

ET,
I do actually let it cool between shots. I shoot other rifles during that interval. I'll try the dry brush technique. You have to experiment. Helping through exchange of information is why we are here.

ET, You have to experiment. Helping through exchange of information is why we are here. That pretty much sums it up nicely.
