I am looking for a fair priced model Brand. Have been looking at the deerhunter from Traditions but they all seem to have lots of flash in the pan problems. Don't know if the owner/shooter does not set the load right or pan load

I bought a NIB Traditions Woodsman Hawken Flintlock 50 cal. I also got some Blk. english flints, couple of touch hole liners, pan primer, ball short starter. Could not find any 4 f for priming anywhere, so my 3f Goex will have to work in the pan. It has a 1-48 twist, so rb/conical/sabots will work. Accuracy will be easier to find on the lower end than stuffing full of powder for the pie in the sky shots. Never owned a Rock sparker before. I have shot caplocks since 1958

I bet i have watched 200 + videos on Flintlocks, either range shooting or hunting. One thing i saw in common with 90 % of them. They almost all flinch at the shot ! I assume the burning powder n frizzen sparks are the cause. I truly hope i don't have that problem, never had it in my life. Mine is rh n i shoot Lh, so the sparks n powder burn happening on my closed eye, should be of some benefit while shooting. I got my Hawken yesterday n opened box inspection. Has couple blems in the brass, over all the Tradition Woodsman is a fair model to start with. Did not come with jaw leather nor a flint, but i have that on hand. This heat wave for the next week will keep me from going to rifle range. I just had eye surgery on my left eye. So its heal n recovery time anyway.

I made a leather jaw holder for the flint n i installed them. Ck'ed the touch hole, its set at the right level n centers the pan. I have the flint edge on the low side but squared to the frizzen n clears the barrel about 3/32". Flint is 5/8" wide, will see how it sparks once i go the range. I have cataract surgery for my right on 27th. So its going to be at least the middle of July before i get to go

Have had my 2nd eye surgery n recovery n healing time now. The morning lows are very high 76, does not look good for any low 60's temps for next couple of weeks. Have all my shooting stuff ready for 1st low morning to head for the range

Well i got the all clear to be no issue on shooting. Temps in the morning is going to be in the low 60's. We are making a range trip in the morning, plan to be there by 6 am. Will give me several hours to start load work. Taking 4 ML's with me

Geez, with my Mrs. insisting she n the 2 furbabies come. I did not get out of driveway til 6:07. Showed up at the range at 7:08, it was 100 yards to tote my ML"S n gear. Not handicapped/disabled friendly at all. I forgot my 2 lb maul so i beat one of my 2x6's into trying get stand to stand. I set it at 50 yards to get on paper, 1st shot hit 3" right, 2nd shot hit 1" lower. Had to beat stand in again, turned 16 clicks left n shot 3rd shot. 2" low but dead center. Target stand fell again, Mrs. calls me she is too hot in car. I load up everything n went home. Will go back when its in the low 60's again.

Real world, i get to range 2nd & the 1st guy has 3 shooting tables of the 8 taken up. So i got my .50 cal on target at 25 yards. Had to bring target in to 10 yards to get my .45 sml on paper. I then got my Rock Sparker on target with .440 patched round balls. By then it was a madhouse with shooters n bystanders & noise. I packed up all my stuff n left. Lessoned learned forget trying to shoot at range on the weekends

smokepolehall sounds like you need a good place to shoot. I guess we all are not blessed to live in the country where you can shoot out your back door. Anyway don't watch the smoke and sparks when you fire the shot. Consentrate on the shot and NOT the flintlock. And squeeze the trigger. Hope this helps. Doug

I am trying that method as i am LH n its a RH Flintlock. I close my right eye to the sparks n flash. My Traditions Woodsman Hawken seems to have good accuracy. I am beginning to wonder about the black english flints. It busted 2 back to back on 2 shots. One is worthless the 2nd i may can get it knapped back to use again
