I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with two guys I "watched" be born and develop into men yesterday. both in the young 30's with young families. Hunters, shooters, great cooks, great fathers, and reloaders.... American all the way. Both have been messing with long range target shooting. One uses a .300 Win Mag and the other a 6.5 PRC. High power, dial up scopes and ballistic calculators.
Out to 550 yds they put on a clinic for me. Hitting small targets at will. I know that this isn't "long" range but it is still quite a poke to be drilling clay pigeon size targets at will. I do not have a dial up scope. I had with me a 7mm Mag with a 3 x 9 fixed power. I brought my ballistic table. I am sighted dead on at 200 with a very accurate handload. Never shot farther with this gun. I connected on the 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 on the first shot on 8" gongs using my chart and assumed hold over based on knowing the size of the small gongs. I went all the way to 550 and finally found the right holdover and smacked the gong a few times.
What a great time! I imagine this seems ridiculous to the long range shooters here who know how easy this can be and what snipers can do these days. But for a country boy with a deer rifle, a range finder, a stupid scope and a ballistic chart, hitting small things at 1/3 mile is doable. I imagine I am not the only one out there who has messed around doing this. I imagine that the people of Ukraine also have guys like this who can easily pick away at the enemy from afar with "rudimentary" weapons from high atop burned out building for a long time. I think they actually did that to a Russian general a few days ago.
Anyhow, it was a good day and a lot of fun. Will soon be getting my heavy barreled Rem 700 .243 back into action with a Leupold 6.5 x 20 scope I have laying around. This platform will be better than my 7mm mag, IMO, for this game. My 7mm is a medium contour sporting rifle and not a heavy rifle. It is, though, very accurate!
