As I understand it a bullet is rolled between two steel files to engrave the knurled pattern on the bullet. But I don't think I have ever heard of the proper description of the files. What exactly do I ask for at the hardware store? Thanks, guys. BOB

I thought a few past there was a video set up here on making a simple file holder to knurl the bullets, perhaps by richard.

After ruining a Brux barrel due to a file tooth embedded in a bullet, I gave up using files and built a contraption using knurling wheels. All a guy really needs is a Floating adjustable lathe knurling tool and hold onto its stem . Lay a machinist #2 file down on a towel , put the bullet on there and roll it back and forth . The file is really just for traction . I do it all the time right on the kitchen table . It doesnt scoot around . Use a caliper or mic for sizing and your in great shape . Very portable too in a range or hunting box i keep in the truck . If i knew how to post a pic of it i would . Very self explanitory if you saw it . Does a Beautiful job !!! Even cheap machine tools are far higher quality than any typically bought hand tool too . Useing 2 files are a welcome thing of the past . Best $20 i ever spent !!! The adjustable one is what you gotta have . I knurl from .375 to 54 cals and you must vary the distance of the knurling wheels to each diameter to keep them from touching the fine toothed file underneath . It also gives needed control over the bullet . Ive knurled up to .008 thou over concerntically even with ease . Im sure you could go bigger with a solid copper if needed . This is a must have tool . Grizzly Industrial Tools has them (floating head adjustable lathe knurler-- H7571 ) for i think $49 but you can find them for $20 if you shop around . I picked up the machinest #2 file for lathe work for $8 i think . Hand held and used youll never hurt them , and they wont hurt you either !!! A Smart man buys a small hole gauge set and knows Exactly what sizes he is looking for to fit that measured bore......

Not anymore do i have one i made but there is a accurate portable way to do it without a big machine . The floating head knurler i spoke of is the way to go especially to travel with . I dont miss my old bench knurler at all !!!
