Hey all, It's been a while since I darkened the door. My son has shown some interest in muzzleloading so I have purchased a CVA Optima for him. Gotta say I'm impressed with the initial eval, course I haven't fired it and that's where I want to start my conversation. My experience is with my Rem 700 that I converted to shoot the 209 primers. It turned out to be a great piece but I haven't fired it in more than a few years.
I would like to start him out on the easy path with Powerbelts and Triple Seven and let him decide where he would like to go from there. Things are a little different now compared to 5-6 yrs ago so I'm looking for some suggestions to start him out. Thanks

I wont get into PB advice because i think they suck and you can buy Fury full bores for about the same cost. ASG has some in 10 packs you can try. Hornady has the new Bore Driver bullet out too.
But......... The first thing you wanna do is scrub the snot out of that brand new barrel. What ever crap they put in there for shipping across the pond has to go before you fire it.
The second thing you wanna do is de-grease the scope mount holes. Apply some blue loctite and re-install the scope mount. They need a new monkey at the factory installing these things.
90gr of loose powder is a good starting point. If he decides to go with sabots you want the Harvester E-Z Load for upto 300gr bullets. That is one of the most commonly used that fit/shoot good in CVAs. A pack of sabots and a 50pack box of Scorpion PT Golds can be had directly from Harvester for about $36+ shipping.
Windex cut 50/50 with rubbing alcohol or HEET fuel line deicer is a excellent swabbing solution for between shots. You will likely need to swab and dry patch using Triple7. The alcohol will help it dry faster and keep it from freezing in the cold. Just soak some patches and squeeze out the excess. Put the premade patches in a sealed jar for the range or hunting. The swabbing mix is also good enough for a quick cleaning before you can get home to do thorough cleaning.
