Hi all,
I’m currently looking to try the Cutting Edge 165 gr 0.400” bullet in my 45 smokeless. I haven’t been able to find loads for lighter weight bullets other than one for the 150 Lehigh (57 gr H4198 for 2500 FPS) - and don’t lighter charges of 4198 have ignition issues?
What about Benchmark - I see it listed for 45/70 loads in the low to mid 50-gr charges, would that work?
I’m not looking for a maximum load, just something to hunt deer with out to 200-250 yds. I currently have H4198 and Benchmark, but am not opposed to buying more powder if I need to.
Thank you for any guidance!
Pete

Benchmark will be too slow for that. N120 makes better speed but i never tried it with bullets under 200gr. 58gr of N120 smokes 58gr of 4198 in speed but could lose a bunch in extreme cold?

I am going to try the same cutting edge 160s in a HLB with 30 grains of N110 and 4759 for my boy. I was looking for really low recoil for him cause he is just starting out.

I’ve shot quite a few CEB 165 and 240g bullets. Since they are milled, consider annealing. Just get to a dark red glow with a propane torch and drop in water. I’ve shot them from 30-39g VV110, wool wad, HLBS, lightly knurled. This is with 209 ignition out of 20” 45 barrel in HandiRifle and 26” barreled 10ML2, PacNor. All loads shot under MOA. This bullet is a bit wind sensitive. Outstanding terminal effect - like a 195B. Always lightly knurl and consider using a vege or wool wad - likely very unnecessarily. Why VV110? I’ve found no powder that has such low temp sensitivity across a range of loadings and temperatures. It’s just uncanny. If you have it powder on hand, try 5744 but stay below 34-35g. I’d try 29-30 first. It has extremely low recoil. Another load would be Blue Dot 17-19g. It has even lower recoil but adequate pressure to not be very temp sensitive.
