I am thinking of using a large shank Savage MLII .50 this Fall. From memory, as it is, I thought a 60 grain load of N120 and 300 grain Barnes originals with the orange MMP sabot were the ticket. Don't recall the primer.
I also have Barnes .458 300 grain flat based cannelured bullets. Interchangeable? Also have Harvester red crush rib sabots, is that also a correct sabot also to use with the two Barnes?
I realize a number now shoot .45s so we have to go back in memory for this. Also the best primer to use. Thanks

The red crush rib sabot is the one best used with a .451 or .452 bullet. The black crush rib works best with a .458 bullet. Most shooters used 4198 powder. RB in Ar stated Rl 10 was a highly recommended powder for 300 grain bullets.

My 50 has a loose barrel and .458 Barnes originals were very loose fit. I've gone with black Harvester Crush rib sabots and it worked so much better. I've used H4198 with 300 BO and needed very snug fit and magnum primers to ignite it reliably. Hornady has 300 grain .458 bullets as well and I mostly shot it as they are much more economical than Barnes. They shot so well that I hunted with them. Pushed really fast, they were like hand grenades when hitting major bones. Once slowed down past 100 yards they are a hammer. Never hunted with Barnes. Still have couple dozen 300 BO's

Harvester now offers a 50x458 Crushrib but it might be too small for most Savage bores.
Black Crushrib and MMP Orange are the ones normally used. MMP Orange will be smaller by a few 1000ths.
