I have my remington 700 muzzleloader about ready to go, hunter bolt kit is on ready for the 209's, Pac-nor .45 cal barrel mounted and headspaced (from Arrow head) use the plug with vent liner, Hankins smooth sizing die on its way, have 4198 power, hornady .452 250gr (bushmaster rifle bullets) I picked these because they are rifle bullets with thicker jackets design for rifle speeds and can get them from Midsouthshooterssupply only 10 miles away and for 26.00 a box of 50. I want to go without sabots, just a few question
1. i see alot of people going to the conversations to use large rifle primers, i like the bolt kit and how easy it is to slide on a 209, is it worth going to standard primer and is there a better 209 primer to go with, for my blackhorn loads in my other guns hotter was better, is it just the opposite for smokeless ??
2. do i need to use a wad between my bullets and powder, is my choice of bullet ok
3. what is the best powder to use, i have read alot of good things about the 4198, plan on starting around 50gr
any other pointers or help is appreciated, thank you for your time

I have a Stevens 45 MacGowen my son shoots it. The load we use is 69gr of 4198 lubed wad and a 290gr Hornady TEZ .451 bullet and a Win209. No sizing load and shoot no sabots just a lubed wad. The thick jackets are harder loading should get the rifled sizing die. I bought a Savage 10ML-ll 50cal I started with 4198 in that and then used it in the 45cal. The only time it did not go BANG is when the powder got wet in rainy weather. So now in bad weather I tape the end of the barrel keeps the powder dry. Check the ID of your barrel inside the lands and groves it will help to size your bullets. My 45cal is .450 and .458 so the all copper .451 TEZ loads and hold tight inside the bore. I got it from Luke when he was still in IOWA I just drove down to his place he was less than a half an hour away then. Now I have to order it and wait for it to be shipped here.

Everything sounds good except, as was mentioned, the bullets might be a bit difficult to size. My first sizing attempt was with .452 Nosler Partitions. I never did get them to shoot well and was starting to get frustrated. Finally decided to try a different bullet and noticed right away how easy they were to size. First three shots were just under an inch. Haven't touched a Nosler since.
Everything else should be good. You could start with a bit more powder, especially out of a bolt gun but there's certainly no harm in starting safe and working up from there.

Same here and ive never been able to get the SSTs to shoot as easily as some other bullets. I bet if you try something like the Fury Startips with a bonded thinner jacket you will be happier. They are under $50/50. Just use some cheap Nosler 250gr HPs ($36/100) for initial testing. They are super easy to get to shoot too but far too fragile for sml speeds.

50 grains of 4198 is way underpressured with bullets from 250-300gns...It will not provide reliable ignition...After many years of shooting these guns with a few just like yours I've found that it's best to go with a 275gn Fury ST and 73gns 4198 and a wool wad...That coqmbo is around 44k psi...well within the safe limits of your gun...Actually in a 209 gun I had the best results using a duplex powder loads of 4759 mixed with 4198...or N110 mixed with H322...If you don't want to jump into duplexing I would go with a 300gn bullet and around 65-69gn of 4198...the heavier the bullet the more reliable ignition...my opinion only....one more thing...get the breechplug with a carbide bushing....

What he said. The FTX does not have a great reputation for terminal results as well as being finicky for some accuracy wise. Much better options out there. XTPs are a good choice for practice.
