I'm talking 50 cal Savage ML2 barrels here. Is there a consensus on stainless vs carbon steel barrel accuracy, consistency, etc? Pros, cons of one vs the other? My Savage is factory SS and somewhat loose. .458 bullets with orange sabot won't ignite reliably. There's few bullet/sabot/powder combinations that will consistently produce 1.25"- 1.5" groups at 100 yards.

You didn't say where orange sabot came from. There is an assortment of sabots from MMP and Harvester for different fits. If you want reliable ignition you need a reasonable snug fitting load combination. I also clean my BP after every 20-25 shots as I still use a vent liner. Ed

I don't recall the brand, Ed, as I traded for partial box of 300 gr. Barnes Originals and they came with those. They fit so loose, I could not ignite H4198 as it would just spit them out few feet out of the barrel. Ended up getting Harvester Crush rib black sabots and it worked most of the time with the BO's and other .458 bullets. .452 are still loose fit too. I have to run it with bastard file to upset them and they fit fine then. Very accurate with 4759 and medium loads. I never jumped on PacNors or other 45 calibers. Wondering if there are some factory take offs out there that sit collecting dust after owner converted to 45.

I haven't jumped on the 45's either. Hope your quest is productive and hopefully a tighter bore. For me there is still some areas with the 50 to explore and some unanswered questions. The hardest part for me at the moment is getting range time with a friend who has a range membership. We got to connect sooner or later, chuckle.

Harvester now sells a 50x458 sabot but i dont think its any tighter than the MMP orange. Maybe try a Harvester Black short with the 458 too? That should be slightly tighter than a black Crushrib. MMP HPH-24 sabot would also be very close loaded OD to the Harvester short black.

MMP HPH-24 sabot would also be very close loaded OD to the Harvester short black. I've tried just about everything I could get my hands on including knurling (which i found to be not so consistent). In winter months with single digits or negative, I was having misfires with H4198. It was not pretty. Downright ugly when you freeze your butt off and pull up on a deer you stalked for some time and PFFFT.... 50x45 sabots were obviously too tight with .458 bullets, though I'd manage to set them couple times. I could feel sabot material being damaged on the way down. Not to say I felt I could get hernia doing it. The remedy suggested was duplex it with 4759 or similar for ignition purposes. I didn't feel comfortable doing that and just reverted to using 300 XTP (.452), knurled, regular sabots and 4759. It fired every time I pulled the trigger. Of course it does not have speed/pressure/trajectory of a load with H4198. So, now I'm considering finding factory 50 someone might have left after custom conversion. Maybe reasonable offer for 50 factory barrel/boat anchor/doorstop/paperweight will fetch me a barrel I could experiment with.

4198 has never been a good choice for the OEM 50cal Savage. Possibly for extreme loads but for typical performance Reloder7 and N120 are far better powders for a 300gr bullet. 4198 is better suited to a 350gr or maybe even a 400gr bullet as far as reliability goes.

reloader 7 is a very very good powder for what you want.

X2 for me! Trying 4198 in my factory barrel 50 ML2s was a disaster. The Rel 7 and N120 are very reliable performers. I think the Rel 7 is a double base powder and has been reliable for me. I use black crush rib sabots and speer .458 X 300 grain Sierra bullets mostly. I found both of the 4198 powders unreliable in my 50 with 300 grain and lighter bullets. Yes I do use the 4198 in my 45 SMLs but never again in my 50s. I use my 50s a lot when hunting public land and need a DRT load. The 300 X 458 sierra in a bcr and a high shoulder shot is the ticket. I can get to that spine between the shoulders from virtually any angle and have deer DRT. Depending on whick 50 I'm using I also shoot 5744 and VV - N110 and they never fail to go BOOOM. This is my opinion and experience, others will differ. 10

Im sticking with 4759 for now then. It was very dependable for me.
