At least my part of it!
Today was one excellent day for shooting. The temperature was around 75* with little wind. The sky was overcast for most of the session (got done around 1 pm) Needless to say, Larry and Herman were well pleased with their rifles. I will let them give you their assessment.
Richard started out with a basically new Leupold 6.5 x 20 scope. It was lightly used and had a very fine crosshair. I rectified this by sending it to Leupold and having them install their "varmint hunter" reticle. They also went over the mechanicals on the scope and did some replacement on the vertical and horizontal adjustments. (I assume they put in new springs or whatever) What a difference in viewing that 300 yard target
My first load (1) put five in 2.2" at 100 yards at 2679 fps. I next took the same load to 300 yards where I managed 4 shots in 3.7"
A few weeks back I shot a nice group with the 300 SST's sabotless with 58 gr. of H-4198 at 100 yards. Today I upped the load to 60 gr. of H4198 at 300 yards. Shots 1,2 and 3 gave me a decent 2.6 group. As I continued shooting, another pair of "snake Eyes" appeared above, then the fifth shot came back into the lower snake eyes to form a .466" cluster (Harley: note, I did not call it a three shot group ) But I did manage a 5 shot 3.5" groups.
What happened here was this: The first shot went Foomph!....Bang, fireball!, hit the top of the 200 yard berm and registered 1400 fps? The only thing I could figure was what another shooter had a while back.....Maybe the .060 veggie wad cocked sideways and when I seated the bullet, it bottomed out on the side of the wad. I know I had it down tight.
As you can see from the targets, its is getting pretty simple to get various loads into the one to two inch range for five shots.
I only had (7) of the 195 Barnes bullets and used them with a new duplex. Man, this load averaged 2884 fps with a very good 35 fps ES and a 1.4" five shot group. I then took the remaining two bullets and shot them into a 1.3" two shot group at 300 yards. The reason they are so high is that I did not realize how flat they shot and used the wrong stadia line on the new scope.
All in all, it was a very good day of gathering load information. But the best part was shooting with Herman, Larry and Bill. I couldn't ask for a better group of "shooting buddies!"
Included are some photos of the range, targets and our group.
