When your looking for the right load when your setting up for competition shooting do you test several different powders and bullets? I recently found a great load for my 243 but can't find any more IMR 4350 and I'm running out. So I switched to Varget and Hybrid 100v to test. Varget showed a little promise but I have 2 ladder test set for 100v and Hornady 105 Amax and Berger 95 VLD Target.
Just wondering if you try several different loads to get your gun where it needs to be for competition?

I normally do not treat multiple powders at one time. I find one I want to use then test it. In 25 to 30 rounds I have a good load or have dismissed that powder from service. When I built my 6.5 Creedmoor I tested H4350 up front because I knew it would work. As soon as I confirmed it I bought 26# of it.
I have done a lot of switching in .308 Win over the last year because PRS is limiting bullet weight in the Tactical Division to 175gn and I've shot 190gn to 208gn for the past few years. There are powders though in every cartridge that I know will work well so I keep them on hand in case I need to do a quick switch.

At those bullet weights I'd use H4350 on the fast side and RL22 on the slow side. Good choices in between would be RE19, RE17, H4831SC, and H1000. The 243 is a mini-magnum.

Powder Valley has IMR 4350 in #8, Hazmat and shipping is tough but like Keith I buy in bulk and it cuts down the hurt. I rely strongly on the Practical Riflery and OCW forums for ballparks rather than waste valuable components on ladder tests. Most often someone else has already found "the" combination that shoots for the bullet powder case you prefer. Case in point I could not find Varget a while back but IMR 4064 was available. With a little research I found by reducing from 47.7Varget to 46.5 4064 the accuracy was stellar and velocity just as good. This is with a 155SMK in .308. The 47.7 load and the 46.5 load were both loads that are known performers for others on the forum. I often tweek .2+/-.2 to make sure it is in the center of the node-- they should all shoot to the same POI.

Tim and I have similar approaches. I call what I do shooting ladders but some guys would call it OCW because I generally shoot 3-shots of each but I do it at a minimum of 300yds. A single shot is not enough or a ladder can lie to you. I will also use the Google machine to narrow down a load to a generally reliable load before I ever crack off a shot unless it is something I am trying that is unconventional.

Right now my ladder test consists of 5 shots of one powder charge then I move up .5 grains then another 5 shots then continue to move up to max charge. Ex. 37.5-5 shots 38 -5 shots 38.5-5 shots And all the way to max charge of 41 grains I'm starting .005 off the lands for now once I find a powder charge to work with I will work on C.O.A.L. I have 95 Berger VLD Target and 105 Amax with Hybrid 100V loaded up. I tried Varget but I didn't have anything that looked promising but I might have had my COAL too long. Every time I do this I learn something new. Along with I've been talking to a local gun shop person who shoots in this class and has been some what coaching me with the info I give him on my testing.

I think Varget might be a little warm for the 95s and 105s. If it weren't for the Hazmat Id send you a bit of IMR4831 to play with as this seems to be the powder for the .243 100-105 gr. bullet @ 42.2 for the OCW on the 95-100 and 40.7 on the 105s. As always start 10% under and go--but I'm betting you'll find this powder works well. Hybrid 100 may work at a little reduction as on my burn chart it sits 3 hotter than 4831.

Just a quick update the Hybrid 100v didn't perform well so I quickly stopped the test looked like in was shooting a shotgun.
I am going to do bullet weight as well and try 87 VMax with Varget next.

The two powders you have will work better with lighter bullets. H4831SC, H1000, and RL22 are your answer for heavier bullets.
