My son just purchased a Savage Predator Max-1 in .243. I am going to put some quality glass on it. In the winter time it will be called upon to kill yotes and during the summer deer depredation control work. Shots will range from point blank to 500 yds. I don't want to over scope the gun because the vast majority of shots will be under 300 yds. He has visions of mounting the Hubble telescope on it....lol I am thinking some thing in the 5x25x50 or 6x24x50 range....with a varmint reticle. This is where I need enlightened....what is the difference between the reticle being on the first plane vs. the second plane? Pros...cons..? Thanks in advance...

I will give my best shot at first compared to second. So on a first focal the reticle stays same size regardless of magnification scope is set on. So for quick target acquisition and using mil dot or varmint style reticle your drops will stay the same regardless of magnification setting. Second focal plane reticle marks change value as magnification is changed. Advantage of second plane is usually better for target shooting since reticle doesn't cover much target.

Now with the above said I have been quite pleased with the Natchez sales on Weaver Classic Extremes. Others like the Weaver Grand Slams, I did not like the Slam as well as the cross hairs were too fine. Ok on the latter for paper and varmints but not good on deer or a dark day/background. Perhaps the Slams have other reticles available. Some have illuminated cross hairs that work well at last light. I have 4 or 5 of the Weavers and like them better for the most part than my Leupolds, Zeiss, Nikon and Elites. In my opinion a lot of scope without breaking the bank. Other of course have their own favorites. Rossman is up on them also as a contact.

Thanks for the info. guys. I have decided to go with a first focal plane scope for our application. There will be multiple shots at different ranges and they happen at times at a very fast pace. I am challenged enough lol As of right now I have it narrowed down to a Sightron and Zeiss.....decisions....

The Zeiss will be fine too on a .243, I have blown the adjustments out on 2 Conquests but with much higher recoiling guns. I do think the Sightron is the "tougher" of the 2, but one may let go tomorrow. Just haven't ever had it happen yet on the Big Sky's.

I am going to get the Sightron SIIISS 6-24-50 LRFFR/MH I've got the same one only in SFP without an illuminated reticle. I like it so far, but haven't shot the gun with it as yet.

I hear all the time of scopes going south I've had Leupolds all my life and have yet had one fail me I guess maybe I am the exception to the rule and I've had some hard kicking guns in my day of course they are within my price range. I don't believe there is such a thing as too much scope
