I've been doing a lot of groundhog hunting--with little sucess--I might add. The fields here need to cut! I know it was posted here before, but I can't find it. Because I'm doing a lot of hunting in all kinds of weather---do you folks tape the end of the barrel and if so with what kind of tape? Does it create any kind of damage--marks? Thanks as always for your help. Have a great day! Dave

Just go to the store and buy some small size balloons and put one over your muzzle. Or if you prefer go to Cabelas and look for Traditions, they sell a pack of special bore covers just for that purpose. Shoot thru either of them with no change in POI. Also TC sell an item to cover your bore with.

Cheap and easy is to cut the fingers off a latex glove. You get five out of each glove. Put them over the barrel.
Since I hunt mainly with my Savage I always have a couple pair of cheap latex gloves in my pocket for field dressing. If it starts to rain or snow I use my knife and cut one of the fingers off and put it over the barrel. Keeps out the weather. It doesn't change a thing in accuracy either. Mike

Wal mart sells finger condoms Ive use in hard downpoors harvested many deer with the condoms still in place as I fire the gun The bullet goes through the latex with no ill affects Just for my own sense of mind I tape over where the primer goes The finger condoms are located in the pharmacy area Ray

I have used both masking tape and electrical tape for years without problems.

Gee; Thanks guys, as always I know I can count on you folks! Just one more question, someone mentioned electrical tape...doesn't that leave a residue? Have a great day! Dave

I never noticed any residue with the electrical tape but it was in the winter and less "sticky" than it might be in the summer. When I cleaned the barrel at the end of the season if there was residue the gun solvent surely removed it.

I have use most of the methods listed above. I am convinced it is a good idea to have your bore covered while hunting. The incident that pushed me to that conclusion was finding a fair sized twig lodged in my barrel. How it got there, I don't know, but it was almost as large in dia as the bore and was over 12" long. I hate to think what would have happened if I had shot with that obstruction. Another time, a taped barrel kept me from having to leave the woods when I tripped and jammed the barrel about a ft deep in mud. I had a cleaning kit, but it was back at camp, far from the deer stand!

Those last experiences did make me sit up and take notice. I did buy a package of 20- I think--T/C bore tapes. Haven't used one yet but will. But when I asked about marring I meant to say the outside of the barrel. Hope to be doing some hunting this coming week--heat or no heat! Thanks again folks, Have a great day! Dave

Another thing I have done to protect the bore is to purchase a few 'O' rings of the correct size to fit over your barrel. With the 'O' ring in place you can use abount any type thin rubber material or tape over the end of the bore and use the 'O' ring to hold it in place.
When you shoot through the material the 'O' ring, if it is tight enough, will stay in place and you just re-use it.

Sounds great! I hunted today, before during and after the rain, and did tape the barrel with T/C's ready made stuff. I proceeded to take a groundhog at 140-150-yards. Had to smile, because I never get to practice over 100-yards. Because of the rain I did tape the barrel but left the camera in the vehicle. Between storms a nice buck and doe fed my way until they were within 40-yards--what a neat photo that would have been. Thanks for all you help and more is welcomed! Have a great day! Dave

i have used tape. ive used masking and electrical tape but have found that they can and do work loose. i like the finger cots they seem to stay on better and you dont have to worry about removing oil to get it to stick.

I'll be using tape when I run out of these T/C ones. Just a side note, check out the varmint thread. I went three for three today! Have a great day! Dave

I just cut pieces of paper i.e. typing, copy or other stiff paper, rub a bunch of lube into the paper until it is saturated and use lube to stick them on the end of the barrel. Cheap and waterproof, blow off with the shot and easily renewed when you reload. And authentic if you are into reenacting. If you cut them just over large for the barrel you can easily see if they are in place. Best, 10ga.

10 ga. What kind of lube do you use? I never knew there were so many ways to cover the bore! Keep them coming, all are appreciated! Have a great day! Dave

I use home made lube, 2 parts beeswax, 2 parts tallow(deer is good, mutton is best from domestic) and 1 part peanut or safflower oil. Mix together and melt together in the microwave or on the stove. I use the peanut or safflower oil as it has a high smoke point degrees, 75 to 100 degrees higher than olive oil. It stays pretty hard even in hot weather. If this is too hard add more oil or if too soft not so much oil. In the winter I just set a container on the defroster vent of the truck to make it soft enough to use. 10ga
