I have a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70. It is a Lyman Centennial Grade 1. When I acquired it, it had already been shot and separated from its presentation box etc. so there is no going back. I would like to shoot it but the 34 inch Lyman scope I want to remove. There is no quarter rib and the only "base" is near the breech and muzzle. I would like to put on a modern scope. I have acquired 1V (Varmint) bases, some say that can be used on this heavy barrel. The barrel is 28 inches long and roughly 1.1 or 1.2 diameter at the breech. Options: I could acquire a Ruger quarter rib in a heavy barrel radius or any other aftermarket bases/rings? Some say the base should extend rearward past the barrel or eye relief is too far. The other issue is it has a curved wood stock and curved steel butt plate. The length of pull is already 13.5 inches and I do not want to cut the stock but would like to add some type of rubber butt plate. Ruger says they have no recoil pads to fit. Any ideas in that regard? I think S&K may have a base/rings but unsure for the heavy barrel. A lot of good minds out there with experience. Awaiting suggestions. Thanks

You will have to cut the stock to add a pad. No if, and, or but; ran into this on a lever gun a while back. As for the bases, it may accept a Ruger base but I cannot say for sure. Other options are custom bases.

SOMEWHERE there is a thread (I believe it was on 24hourcampfire) which instructs one how to make recoil pads from flip-flop sandals. One of the guys on predatormasters made one to replace a steel curved butt plate. They aren't very thick, but it would be an improvement.

Yeah, it's on the Fire. I've done it, just did it again as a short term fix on a lever gun, and it works ok on moderate recoil. It also is a way to save weight on bantamweight guns. It never looks good and it doesn't do much for heavy recoil.

I personally would not cut the stock even tho it has been fired and out of its case \ box ...still very unique i would find some rings and bases that will work maybe a different scope and have it all so that it can be reassembled to its original
