I was working my way around an Alphalfa pivot in the sandhills right at first light this morning. The snow was blowing in my face and it was 11* with about a 0* wind chill It was stinking cold!.... There were several deer in the hills and several more in the pivot. I spotted this old boy out in the distance, I'm guessing around 600yds... I could barely make him out but even in the dim light and blowing snow I knew he was the one I wanted. I crept down a fence line and finally stopped I figured at around 300yds. Couldn't get a range because of the snow.. Some smaller bucks and does were between me and him and they were getting nervous so I took a good rest on a wooden fence post. I held at the top of his back and the rest is obvious...The hole you see is the exit ...took out both shoulders and a fist sized chunk of meat going out. This damage is very similar to the buck I posted last week during rifle season using the same load and bullet, 7/60 Clays/4198, 290TEZ 2700fps ...I'm thinking it's way overkill for shooting deer....This is a good deer for my neck of the woods 200+ lbs with a 28" spread. One tine was broken off. I think he was the heavyweight rutting champion on that hill... It's over for me this year.. This is my 54th year hunting these Mulies and it's been a good one... My wife doesn't like me going hunting alone. She says I'm getting too old, and it's too cold, and I'm going to die on the hill someplace,on and on and on... As long as I can still walk I'm going.... I'm still loving it...Riverrat is coming out Friday....time to put on my guide hat and try to put him on one.. Zen

Boy you titled this post correctly Zen. That is one fine looking animal and a great shot. Congratulations. As for your wife, tell her that we are all going to die at some point. Might as well do it while doing something that you love.

Did the shoulders explode with shrapnel to take out that kind of meat? I have never seen a hole like that posted from any Barnes bullet. Heck even the 275MH wasn't that horrific on a one shoulder shot doe I took.

Hell of a buck. Tell your wife I would be happy to be your hunting chaperone. I'll even let you shoot first.

Heck even the 275MH wasn't that horrific on a one shoulder shot doe I took. First time I've seen that much damage using a Barnes bullet also..I didn't process either deer but it looks like it was bone and scapula that came out the exit. I've killed a few with the 250tez and it was hole in and hole out. The spine was destroyed on both deer also. I've seen similar damages done using the Master Hunter bullets. Zen

Beautiful deer and gun!
I'm in my 58th year of bow(now mostly xbow) hunting. I'm 4 years older than you. My wife says my hobby has likely kept me much more physically fit than I would have been w/o this hobby, i.e. has likely extended my life. This thought may help with your wife. :-)

That is a nice buck and a great shot . This year is my 53 year hunting . I know I'm starting to slow down a little but I still made two trips to North Carolina deer hunting , out four mornings for pheasants here in New Jersey , and next week is buck season . Chris

That is an old mulie. Those TEZs are quite good bullets. I am in my 52 year of deer hunting I think, I would have more but we did not have deer in Ohio or a season in my area when I was younger.
