Looking to build my best friend a light weight sml .40. He is not real hip on using a sizing die. With a .400-.408 bore. What bullets would be pack to bore? I thought I read some ones post about knurling up Barnes and SST's to fit there bore. We are even talking about a .45 for use with sabots and sabotless. There again he is not real hip about a sizing die for saborless.

I have to knurl the bullets for my .400/.408 McGowen and they still load with very little effort. From your description, I would get him a .450/.458 Pacnor and shoot sabots.

If I still remember correctly the pacnor ss 408 1:16 are tight and need a die, CM was pretty good for some bullets and loose on others so needed knurling. Pacnor 408 1:13 are loose loose and required considerable knurling. Mcgowen seems to have the edge on the 408's because they fall in the easiest to knurl for category.

The 400/408 McGowen builds out there are proven shooters for sure. My 13 twist 400/408 Pacnor is REALLY loose like Cole Stated. If I were to build a new 400/408 right now, I'd definitely go McGowen. Good luck

The land to land size is 0.401" making it perfectly sized for knurled 195 Barnes, 200 SSTs and XTPs, 40 cal CEBs (heavily annealed). I have little experience with the latter. Copper bullets usually perform better when annealed. When I tried the CEBs, I didn't anneal them. Should have.

CEB's definitely need annealed well..

I hadn't read the other responses when I composed mine. My 40 PacNor(16 twist) is absolutely the right size for the 40 cal bullets. It is the oldest one as far as I know. I did stroke it with about 100 strokes of JB(not a lot). When I place an unknurled 200SST or XTP, it won't fall to the bottom of the barrel. But it does need knurling to have adequate resistance .

I have a NEF 45-70 converted uses sabots n .40 cal bullets. Have been workin on loads since this past spring. Once i hit on the right load combo it should be fairly accurate tick toter killer out to couple hundred yds. My funds were limited but i wanted a decent huntin sml. I don't shoot lots of targets jus lots of deer

My H&R HandiRifle 45-70 converted is very accurate. It shoots sub-MOA with virtually every load and bullet combination. Much can be done to optimize the NEF & H&R rifles such as trigger jobs, a little work on the forearm support, etc. A converted 45-70 is an economical choice.
