I just picked up a really nice MK-85 carbine, ideal for tree stand or blind. When I stripped the rifle to clean it, I removed the plunger/bolt by pulling trigger and pushing safety forward while withdrawing the plunger. However, when I tried to replace bolt it was a no go. The only way I can get the bolt back in the rifle is by removing stock and loosening the Timney trigger. Of course, this changed my zero. What am I doing wrong? My assumption is that the sear is blocking things. However, trigger breaks like glass at 20 ounces, with zero creep, and I really don't want to mess with the sear.

Are you pulling/holding the trigger when you try to put the bolt in?

There is a set screw on the left side of the action that locks the bolt in place that can interfere too...back it out a few turns.

I am pulling the trigger as I try to reinsert the bolt. Also, I removed the screw that serves as a bolt stop when I disasembled the rifle.

The rifle is a fifty caliber short barrel (20") with wood stock. Former owner told me that he owned the rifle for many years. It has been well maintained.

Safety in the fire position? I don't remember if that is needed, but it does on my Savage centerfire and the trigger pulled.

I always removed the trigger, before I remove or install the bolt, the MK 85 was ahead of its time, very accurate and well built with an adjustable trigger. One of the most accurate ML's on the market when they first came on the market.

The short 20" MK85 was called a "Back Country Carbine", I bought mine " Stainless/Walnut" almost 30 years ago and have taken many whitetails with it. I have always removed the trigger assembly when removing the bolt.
