I'm wanting to drill and tap the 3rd Pillar 1/4 x 28 Screw for my (2) Savage 10ML-IIs. What is the Spacing you guys are using?

I cannot speak for everyone but several of us have made the third pillar one inch on center from the factory hole.

The first one I had done we went 3/4 in front of the factory hole. The second was 1 inch. The 1 inch cleared the pin in the stock.

We kinda settled on 1" in front of the rear screw (center-to-center) as a standard and it works out pretty well.

Mine is drilled to match the 4.4" 3 screw Savage Target Action.

That would be dead nuts in the center 2.200" and would be my recommendation for positioning.

For those that weren't around 14 yrs or so ago when we hashed this out, the reasoning behind the 1" in front was that the purpose of the third pillar was so that when you dropped the rear screw to remove the bolt the action didn't shift. The farther forward the more chance of a shift (yes it is slight chance but still a chance). Less then 1" you ran into the crossbolt of the factory laminate and several aftermarket stocks. There has been enough of them done that way that I've had customers buy used 10ML-IIs that have had it done and swapping stocks has not been a problem. Another cosmetic advantage is you do not see the hole when you open the bolt. I've even seen them done as a blind hole but I've also seen those stripped out because the bolt they then used only grabbed like 2 or 3 threads and when over tightened....
On the 10ML-Is or model 12 single shots I always like to go center.

Is there a tutorial somewhere that describes the third pillar process?

For those of us that haven't been around or haven't seen yet. Here is a ml-II that Rossman added the third screw to for ohioguy.

Is that a hairline crack or an optical illusion?

Would love to lead you on but definitely not cracked! That's the centerline that it was drilled on

There was a big change in the plastic used by MMP and Harvester back around 2003 which made the sabots a whole lot tougher. Prior to that we tried a lot of different things like cutting the petals off another sabot or a 28 guage wad and then there was Edge's "flying hardware store" which also used washers to strengthen the base. Toby Bridges talked Del at MMP into making the sub-bases which worked great when you paired them with Del's HPH sabots. It did seem that you lost a little bit of accuracy with the subases which caused the groups to open up a bit. Maybe because the extra base cushioned the bullet a bit cutting back on the kick that was needed to fully orbutrate the bullet.
