Here we go again, snowing hard in central va. somebody kill that groundhog this summer. Nothing to do now but plan a new sml build. If I go 45 cal.,there is lots of proven infor already, but to get a high bc you have to go heavy. Increases recoil. 40 cal. , not many bullets available. Lots of talk lately on .375 cal. Looks good but how about a .358 cal. sml.?

Here's what I'm thinking : 700 ml action

.358 1 in 14 with powder chamber

savage bp with bushing

225 gr. .358 nosler ab @2700 .430 bc

around 50k psi max.

Disregarding legal issues with sub .45 cal. for deer hunting,is this doable? Will there be problems full forming to fit a .358 bore? Will a boattail shoot?

You guys at Dougs are the source for sml information, your opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks leftyml

Yes, it will work and I would expect that you can reach 2900 with a 225gr with the correct powder combination. Boattails will shoot just fine full formed IMO. It will be a fun gun to shoot and dispatch Philip the groundhog when you get the chance.
