Its time for a new muzzleloader and I'm thinking the smokeless route is the way I want to go . I have a 20 gauge hnr ultra slug, can I convert it? Smokeless is new to me any input would be awesome.

SMI does conversions on that gun. They put a douglas barrel on it with their BP design. Mine is on the 12g USH that shoots very very well.

Okay. I was leaning toward the hnr 45-70 or apex if I couldnt convert the ush.iv read that slufoot will convert the 45-70 if you send the savage breech? What is the best route, as the buffalo classic is fairly inexpensive?

What is the best route, as the buffalo classic is fairly inexpensive? If you can afford it the CVA Apex is a great choice for the use of sabots or sabotless shooting. I had SMI do my H&R with a Douglass barrel. I could not in good conscious recommend them to someone else, the barrel is great, the turnaround time sucked.. Slufoot or Jeff Hankins both do good work in converting what ever you decide on and do so in a timely manner. Whichever BP you go with use a tungsten bushing in it.

Are you referring to turn around time as in it took them along time to finish and send your muzzleloader back to you?

Rangeball, I noticed the Douglas barrel has a 1-36 twist, should I consider something faster? I'm interested in .45 cal. Can I shoot sabotless out of this barrel or strictly sobot only. Sorry for all the questions, just like to gain some of your knowledge.

Rambler, any suggestions on how to contact slufoot? For some reason I do not have the option to pm him when I click on his user link under the member page. SMI lied to me on more than one occasion. I would call them for status and they would say that the Douglas folks sent the wrong caliber, I then called Douglas and they didn't know what I was talking about and hadn't sent them anything, and a few other leg pullers. Also they frown on shooting sabotless. Doing business like that is unacceptable to me. If you can't man up and tell the truth there's something very wrong. The crown was terrible as well. It took them 10 months to get the gun to me. Fortunately it's hard to mess up a Douglas barrel. Mine is now 26" with a standard 1:22 twist.
SMI's website is about 15 years out of date.
slufoot's member link below. If he is the one you want converting a gun you will be in great shape. I'm told he does very good work.

Good luck and be safe. Follow the suggestions these good folks dole out and you'll be a deer slayer in no time.

welcome eml9, This is the right place for the info you seek. H&R is not fitting barrels any more or making any more guns for the time being. Even so they would not fit a 45-70 on a shotgun frame. For the least $ the best start is a 45-70 conversion. One of the Break actions converted by slufoot is a foolproof bambi buster.
I suggest you lurk about here on the board and use the search engine to cover subject matter of interest. Post questions and any problems you may have. With the H&R disappearing it looks like other break action 45-70 will be available. Perhaps a CVA or other will come to you. There are several 45-70 break action that can be converted and there are plenty of H&R around even now. The CVA Stalker, Optima Elite and Apex are all in current production.
It is cheaper and easier to buy a new modest priced 45-70 and get it converted than have SMI build a complete barrel for your current H&R action.
Again welcome, lurk about, search and ask questions. 10 ga

Cannot give you much information on your build seeing that I am new to the smokeless game myself but I can give you some advice on the SMI route. STEER clear of that company. I have a H&R conversion from them in .50 caliber. They have the worst customer service of any company I have ever dealt with---period. Took me three months of calling to ever get a hold of anyone for the build and then I sent them my receiver and money. They never notified me they got the gun, didn't cash the check for six months, and never ever returned a single phone call. Ever!!! There is more but you get the picture. From what I have learned and read on this site, Sluefoot and Hankins are awesome to deal with. I actually talked to Hankins on the phone about a new build and he answered his phone and took twenty minutes of his time to talk about builds and options with me with no commitment to him even doing the job. Awesome guy and I won't forget it. Good luck on whatever you choose. Very addicting sport we have here. Joe

If you are interested in .45 I would go with a 45/70 and have it converted. Cheaper and will shoot good.
SMI must have really changed since I had mine done several years ago. I was very satisfied with their work and how the gun shoots.

rangeball. I'd have to agree with you a couple of years ago I needed some B/P's for mine they were prompt and answered questions. Just goes to show you how companies can change.
