I've go a 45 caliber encore converted by slufoot that I'm getting ready to shoot sabotless. Also purchased the swing lock smoothing die from Luke. Anyways, I've got the die set up on my press ready to go and have pushed a few bullets through to get the hang of it using my imperial sizing wax. So from my reading on here the bullets should load with about 30 pounds of pressure. How do you check the loading pressure? Also, I'm in Ohio where it's usually pretty cold out during muzzleloading season. Should I leave the gun in my garage where it's colder and get the size on a cold barrel versus a room temperature barrel? My guess is would be different as we're talking about thousands of inches when your sizing bullets.

Loading pressure can be measured to some degree by loading on a bathroom scale to see what pressure is needed. I try to leave my gun in the cold so I do not have potential condensation issues from going from warm to cold etc. I have had to make adjustments on my swing lock die depending on different bullets, temperatures, fouling in the barrel etc. For me it has not been one size and forget it.

Place the butt end of the stock on an analog bathroom scale and zero it. Insert the projectile into the muzzle and push it down with the ramrod while watching the scale reading. Be sure to push it out the breach, as there can be tight spots. I would start with the barrel at room temp.

And when you are sizing bullets,,, do not think in thousandths, think in tenths. a bullet that is .451 that wont fit,, sized to .450 will fall all the way to the bottom. Make very small adjustment to the die... that perfect bullet size for your barrel might be ..4508, It is quite critical to get the size perfect...

Why is it not sufficient to just push the bullet thru your barrel drop either once or even a few times? Wouldn't that size it perfectly to the bore?

no it will not, just because it goes through a drop does not mean it will fit your barrel correctly, as Jeff said we are talking ten thousandths here. you will need to use your adjustable die to correctly fit your barrel. a clean barrel and a fouled barrel will be somewhat different as well. get about 15 lbs pressure on a clean bore and you should be close on a fouled one..

On some bullets I think there is a type of Spring Back. So sometimes I have to size somewhat smaller originally to take that into account or I cannot get them down the barrel, at least without hammering them down the barrel and I do not want to do that especially in the field.
