First, I apologize if this is a redundant subject.
I am just getting back to my SML shooting after about 1 - 1 1/2 year focus on some other things.
I have a Encore ProHunter with a slufoot savage breechplug conversion and am in the process of putting together a CVA Apex with a .45/70 slufoot barrel conversion.
Both are the "standard" slufoot conversion with vent liners in savage breech plugs.
SML progress haas passed me by in some areas in my "absence" and this is one of them.
Can someone explain:
- the concept/value of a "bushing" breechplug
-And how/where I can get that done (and the cost)
Does this do anything for accuracy or change the recipe you use?
Thanks for your help!

The bushing is intended for guns shooting loads that burn out ventliners fairly quick. If your shooting saboted and getting 50 shots or so on a vent you don't really need a bushing. If your shooting sabotless with larger powder loads that burn out the vent in 25 shots or less, the bushing is for you. A pure tungsten bushing should last many hundreds if not thousands of shots. I am the one that does the machining on the plugs. I can modify your plug and provide the bushing, 2 lock rings, and return shipping for $70. It should have no effect on accuracy or load.

The bushing plug last longer than the ventliners... They were mainly developed for the sabotless guys shooting hot loads and duplexs...These loads were eating vents or opening them from .031 to .035 with 10 to 20 shots and load development was a struggle because they were shooting a different gun after a couple of shots because of erosion to the vent orifice....Not long ago we were restricted by sabots and the most pressure that was shot was around 32-33 K/psi....The vents held their own and showed normal wear, but when sabotless ml began to develop 42-50K/psi and higher were what was being shot... Imo in your two builds a ventliner system should be fine, with the barrels you are shooting you should not be shooting as hot of loads as what the customs are because they were not designed for it. FishHawk modifies the savage plug and installs bushings ....Good Luck.

I shoot my Prohunter mainly with sabots and 56-60 gr of 4198 and 195 Barnes.
I am just starting to move to a 10/48-50 duplex of 4759/4198 and trying some sabotless shooting with TEZ's.
I plan on shooting the Apex sabotless with 250 TEZ's and a similar duplex load.
Do either of you have a picture of the modifications you could post?
What do the lock rings do and where do they go?
Once the modification is made, is the bushing itself then replaceable?
THANKS!!!

This was in a SMI plug, but same deal. The bushing is replaceable.

I think he has suggested getting them from Luke (Arrowhead Sporting Goods). E-mail: sales@smokelessmz.com (I will reply to PM's too, but e-mail is a lot handier for me( Luke ).)

I can modify a Savage breechplug if you have one for $27 with shipping. If you need a plug, you can buy a modified one from Luke. The bushing you can get from Luke.

I have a few that are .75" and 1" from the local hardware. They aren't hollow but could be easily drilled on a drill press.

There are "venting" set screws but the hex does not go all the way through like on the short jam screws.
edge.
McMaster-Carr has them search for Vented Cup Point Set Screws
