This was the first five bullets fired from the shorty, I wanted to makes sure it was safe and get it close on paper. I shot one (Clean Barrel), adjusted the scope and shot 3 more, gave scope slight adjustment and shot #5. Not a bad start for some cheap bullets Cole sent me to plink with. (I couldn't even remember what they were other than 180 gr) These are the only shots I fired, I wanted my daughter to get her hands on it and start shooting it to get familiar and comfortable with it. All shots were at 100 yards and yes off the hillbilly lead sled/picnic table/1970's lawn chair!
Switched gears, loads and shooters and put the girl up to the gun for her very first time. She shot one, (went high) I made a scope adjustment and let her shoot three more. Load was 10/48, 4759/Varget. 200 SST, wool wad, win primer. Not bad for first four shots ever with a rifle, any rifle!
Switched loads again, this time went with 7/49, N110/Varget, 195 Barnes, wool wad, win primer. She shot 1 and 2, I made a scope adjustment and she fired 3,4,5 which these 3 ended up being just under .5 MOA, for her best group of the day.
All in all I was very pleased with her and very pleased with Cole's build. All bullets were sized LOOSE! I used one hand to load every single load, we never had one misfire, (even with a straight low dose of RL7) no bulged or stuck primers and the primers come out clean, very clean. I think we can tweak this guns loads a bit and really find a sweet spot, it seems like it's going be a typical full formed shooter! Just shorter... After she kills her deer with it, I'll take it to the bench and see how good I can get it to shoot, right now I'm just focused on getting it deer good for her and getting her comfortable with it. I think we are off to a great start. The recoil was mild, she didn't complain a bit and I believe she fired it 21 times! and every shot she fired would have easily equaled a dead deer at 100 yards. Thanks Cole for such a fine job, outstanding work!

Ohioguy I’m really impressed with your daughters first go at shooting the SML. I think both you and Dave are going to have some serious competition as this young lady’s talent develops. Ed

The only gun she had ever fired from a bench in her life was a Mossberg 20ga slug gun, so I was pretty happy with this first outing and she Loves the gun, every aspect of it. This Timney in this gun breaks really nice... Thanks for the kind words all, she will be grinning from ear to ear as she reads these posts....

I got to see a couple more targets she shot and they all were quite impressive! I can't believe this was her first rifle experience, she's got a natural talent for sure! Can't wait to see her in the success stories section with a buck just a little bigger than Dad's.... Will you bring here into ohio for youth season or is wv's season in at that time?

Ohio youth season is the weekend before WV firearms season starts... So hopefully Saturday or Sunday she can kill a buck in Ohio, and get after em in WV the very next day/week. There happened to be 2 different 8 points pushing doe's around my dads house (while we were shooting), both pretty respectable bucks for WV, she was drooling and said: Hey, either one of those will do just fine for my first WV deer. I do believe I'm going to be skinning and butchering a couple this year, even if I don't pull the trigger...

That is some great shooting, and the targets are great. You have to be real proud of her, she has a great trigger finger. Great shooting. Carlos

Dad has to be a pretty good instructor, too. That fantastic first time shooting wasn't done just by handing it to her and let her fire away! But good for her, too. Many of us here didn't do that well our first time shooting these SML's.

I think Ohioguy is definitely on to something good using a wad for full form sabotless.
Were the 180gr bullets Speer's?

They were powerbond 180gr flat points. Had to sound like a brick flying at the speed of light! The powerbond are super cheap $0.10 each and shoot pretty well for plinking perposes. The way I calculated it that first 5 shot group cost right at $1 for the whole thing. Not bad for the results! Maybe next outing we can get old clicky hill to let the scope be and see what it will do!!

Maybe next outing we can get old clicky hill to let the scope be and see what it will do!! I was chasing the scope too much and that's my fault, I was wanting to be sure it moved as it was supposed to, but I did move it too far on her a couple times. Next time I promise to not move it so much and I will get her a better chair to shoot from, she was about 4" too low compared to what she needed to be, so it was a struggle for her to get up and be comfortable, all in all for the cards I dealt her, she did well. The only coaching she got was, "relentless" making sure the gun was centered on it's own without her holding it, making sure her grip was right, and severe preaching to take her time and squeeze slowly and let the gun surprise her when it went off. A little side note I didn't mention before was, these shots were load and shoot as fast as we could get it reloaded and get her reset on the rests, we didn't have much daylight left to mess around. The only cool down time allowed was when we switched out targets. I really believe once we get a load dialed in and get her really comfortable and allow a few minutes of cool down time between shots, this lil gun is really going to shoot good. We've just begun, there is a bunch of testing yet to do. I smiled from ear to ear when I shot the first five shots with the 180gr bullets and 42gr of RL7, it was like shooting a heavy 410 with 2 1/2 shells...no recoil (Not sure what that load was doing whether it would make a sufficient hunting load or not, but boy it shot good and was pleasant to shoot.. Thanks for all the positive feedback all, she's a happy kid and reading the comments only made her smile more.. One thing for sure, the deer are in trouble! At least at 100 yards and in....

Took the daughter and her .392/.400 shorty out this evening for final sighting in for the upcoming youth season, we just primarily shot for groups and load testing the first time out, so we needed to get it dialed in and ready. We settled on a load of 10/49 - 4759/Varget, 195 barnes (sized loose) wool wad and winchester primer. First shot on a clean gun was low and left of the bull, gave it some right clicks and shot#2, that moved it where we needed for left and right, adjusted up to get the height where we wanted, fired two consecutive shots and they were touching at 12 o'clock in the bullseye. We called it good and headed home. She's ready and hopefully she will get a chance to make some fur fly within the next week, she's definitely amped up, confident and excited. Side note, this lil Rem build Cole threw together is a work of art and has performed flawlessly. Thanks Cole!

Here is the girls sight in target from last night. She shoots true for sure, with each adjustment it was where it should have been. Hopefully she can do the same on brown.

Don't be taking the gun off of her this weekend if that 8 shows up. I think she is good to go if the nerves do not get to her. Be something if she shot that buck her first time out.

Not likely to happen where I'm taking her, but ya never know. Any good buck will do and like you said, I hope her nerves hold up and I hope I can get her comfortable to shoot..

Great shooting, teach a girl to shoot and make a future husband behave. Thanks, she's doing well already, hopefully she can do it when it counts. We will soon see if the opportunity arises. She has made me promise I'll drive her to Van Wert, Ohio so she can hug Cole if she pulls it off. Saving my gas money already.....
