A guy that works for me also blew his factory SS MLII today, a very nice rig that I pillared/etc 3 yrs ago. the culprit? a load left from last year and a failure to check it. a double load of 65 grn H-4198 and 325 FTX. thank the Lord the only thing hurt was his gun which was destroyed but Yes a grim reminder of what can and does happen when we fail to be diligent.
I say again, SMLs are not for the masses, be safe guys!

Bill, any idea how many shots were on that gun? Reason I ask is the second year my brother in law had his stock savage he went out to check zero and his first shot was loud and hard and put two holes in the target. Turned out he'd left loaded since the last season and double loaded it. Gun had maybe 12 shots on it. Gun was fine, no bulge and still shoots great. Load was 42gr n110 under a saboted 250gr sst, repeat.

That's Way I never put my gun up with the breech plug in them. I us a sock and put the breech plug in it and tie it to the gun. that way you see what you have when you go shooting or hunting. people need to just take there time and witch what there doing if something looks wrong or do not remember start over and dump it out a little powder loss is chip. be safe and good hunting.

I always pull the bolt and look thru the barrel/vent liner. My H&R conversion, when broke down, allows the eye close enough to the breech plug to bore sight the gun. It is amazing how much you can see thru that .030 vent liner/bushing.

Jeff,
Is that a Rem 600 Mohawk action? It's hard to see in the pic but how far did the barrel run 1.2"? Correct me if I'm wrong on starting diameter but I think it starts at 1.2". How do you feel your barrels would fair with a double load like that being a heavier contour? Would a barrel hold up better if double loaded with loose fitting bullets like yours? I'm thinking yes but don't really know. I'm not being sarcastic with the questioning and I feel bad for the gentleman being injured.

Range it had been used little, I got the gun for him a few years ago and it had not been used much.
the difference between a 250 grn double load and a 325 would be huge pressure wise, the barrel split right down the middle like a banana and made splinters out of the factory laminated stock..

Thanks Rick. I put my glasses on and could finally read what's on the action. The silver button lookin thing on the action by the stock made me think it was something different.

Thanks for that report Hillbill. I wondered what would happen to a Savage when double loaded. Glad one can go uninjured in that type of catastrophe. SML. I agree all double load and other serious incidents should be reported. Then they can be moved. I don't naturally look at the safety section. Is there something that alerts you of something worth reading there? I say everyone should "fess up" to serious mistakes (like my AD into my floor). It is helpful and I'm afraid even entertaining.

The shooter got injured...he lost his thumb....not so lucky, and it was a sendero contoured barrel . Those were a couple of things that caught my attention..... Give it a read ...Everyone....plz.

Sml
Hillbill and Jeff are talking about two different incidents. One was a Savage and one a Remington.
