I am getting a CVA Apex 45-70 conversion and can only find Imr3031 powder in my area. I'll be shooting 275 BE Parkers. Can anyone tell me how much powder or if I need to use something other than 3031.
Thanks.

3031 may be hard to ignite as a single powder. You may need to duplex to get reliable ignition.

I'd try to find green dot, red dot, clays, blue dot, unique, long shot or even 4759 as a booster with 3031.
Start with around 7 grains of a booster and 55 grains of 3031 and it should work. Work up the 3031 and try to hit 2700 f/s and I wouldn't go much hotter than that.
I've used 3031 with 4198 as a booster and worked well but the shot gun powders should work better.

I personally would not push a sabotless 275gr bullet at 2700 FPS with a CVA Apex conversion. It's your gun and you pulling the trigger so do as you want though.

Yes be careful with loading break guns that heavy. I think 2500 fps would be plenty. Remember barrel chamber area on apex is 1.100 and has 4 scope mount holes drilled inline right over chamber pressure area. Just my opinion especially tc encore with1.000 barrel

I think a 5/55 combo of SR4759 or Clays under some 4198 would be a good load for a Hornady 250FTX.

Ping asked my question. If it is a Hankins conversion I think 3031 as a single might work.

I would agree with 2700 f/s being too much with the 275 BE's. Using 3031 though it doesn't create as much pressure. However I would think 2600 f/s would be max speed. I've been getting ignition with the modified savage plug and .o4o bushing and straight 3031. With a ventliner I would use some kind of booster though.

Jeff 3031 should work just fine then with out a booster. 85 grains straight in a 25" barrel and 300 SST is around 2650 f/s. FYI I would not start with 85 grains start with 70 see where that is or even 65. I would use a wool wad or veggie wad.

Since you're getting the system from Jeff, maybe he could also hook you up with some other powders at the same time. 2 birds with one stone..

Unfortunately Jeff don't ship Haz-Mat. I use to but I let my certification expire... I wish I had some 3031 just to see if it will hang fire on me but I'm sure it will not... I can ignite 125 grains of 4350 so 3031 should be a piece of cake. Jeff

It is a hankins conversion. I happened to luck up today and find some IMR4198. Can not wait to get the gun in my hands and put some bullets down range.
