Well guys the KY. ML season opener has came and gone. I hunted with SML (allan) and a friend of his.. We had quite a good time.. I hunted in the river bottom where I had the KY challenge and I saw quite a few doe and one nice buck on opening day. My nephew (Garrett) shot a nice 8 pointer in the field during the youth season the week before.. He was pumped.. When Allan and Rodney arrived on Friday I took them around the farm and showed them some stands I had up and ready for them. Allan hunted a stand just up from the river and Rodney took a stand I have built at the far end of the farm. While looking around I collected the SD cards from my trail cameras and to my surprise we found this guy.. So now we are excited to know there is a big boy running around. SML nick named him freak-nasty.. Opening day was rainy and Wendy but we all saw deer and a good buck or two. Mindy and me shot a doe and then went to the river bottoms to watch 60 acres of soy beans. Almost as soon as we got there I saw 6 doe in the field eating. As the day came to a close a big 8 point with no brow tines came out and walked around at 100 yards from our stand. I was able to get him on video and he was a pretty nice buck, just not a shooter for me. As day two starts out I saw a coyote at 200 yards and a raccoon at 325.. Just before dark a bunch of does came out and I shot two of them right smack in the nose. One was 125 yards the other one was about 150. The 275 BE will drop them dead. When hunting for meat it's best to take your time and make head shots.. Just minutes before I shot that last doe I heard Rodney shoot.. He had shot a buck, so I went to pick up Allan and when we got to Rodney we discovered he had shot Freak-Nasty. A 200 plus inch buck that was an absolute brute. It took all three of us to get him loaded after I gutted him. He weighed 190 lbs field dressed.. This picture does not do him justice but he is a brute.. This was Rodney's first hunt ever with a muzzle loader and he shot the buck at 40 yards with a 325 SST and a black ribbed sabot shooting 68 grains of H 4198. Needless to say he is happy as they can get.. Jeff

Rodney got a good buck an it looks like you guys had a great time. Allan was pumped when I talked to him last night. looks like I will get to lay hands on Freak Nasty today when they pass through my neck of the woods and drop off Bam Bam.
one thing for sure Jeff, the deer feel no pain from the stinger end of your stick, dang, that's some bad stuff right there...LOL

Over the years I've killed a couple with head shots with my .270... None of them looked like that!!! That's what you call dead in their tracks...Dang..... Garret is hooked for life... Zen Garrett has been killing deer since he was probably 6 years old.. Started shooting them with a 223 Remington classic I had,, now he's up to a 308... Next year I'm going to move him up to the ML and see how he does... Those deer were shot with the 275 BE at 125 and 150 yards. 3000 fps muzzle velocity.. My girl friend Mindy video taped their heads getting shot off.. They looked like exploding watermelons. I will edit the video and upload it when I can.. Still got one more deer to de-bone then ill be headed back home.. Jeff.

Sounds like a good hunt. A 200 plus inch buck that was an absolute brute. Just to clarify, that is a 200" deer?

Good shooting. My varmint loads are not that explosive. No loss of meat.

Yes.. 200" B&C or pretty close to it.. That's a rough guess.
Jeff.

Picture must be deceiving, cause I woulda guessed 160's gross at best.. Heck of a nice buck with alot of character either way.

Man those pics are worse than a horror movie! That is sick! How bad is the damage on a broadside boiler room shot? I would like to see that, but would not want to pick the shrapnel out of the meat. Great job on your whole weekend guys, and of course congrats on that great buck.

Very effective shooting. What kind of rest did you use? How far out do you try to head-shot does?

I agree based on the picture but thought I would ask first in the event it was scored by someone qualified to do so. Either way, it is a nice deer but it does not appear to be 200" of antler.

Great deer and don't worry about what people say just put it in the wall and be proud!
Head shot looks pretty nasty!

5.5 inches at the base. 24 inch outside spread and main beams we 23 inch and 22 inch. Points were very long and although we used a steel tape measure to just get some close numbers it is one heck of a buck. I have a 166 B&C and a 186 B&C officially scored and he is bigger than either one on mine.... But who knows looks can be deceiving sometimes.. I guess we will have to wait and see. Jeff.

Very effective shooting. What kind of rest did you use? How far out do you try to head-shot does? Phil.. I was set up on the shooting bench just like I would be if I was shooting groups. I had a Caldwell Rock and a rear sand bag. These does were only 150 yards and I would have head shot them out to 300 if they would have came out at the far end of the field. The farthest head shot I ever made was 597 yards. I shot this one with my 300 WSM Varminter using a 125 grain bullet at 3800 FPS muzzle velocity.

Here's the 197 gross that Rossman killed 2 years ago. I felt honored to hold that rack!

Yep I saw that baby out of the corner of my eye and it's a beast for sure!
I hope Jeff at least assessed a trophy fee!

Congrats to the guide! I know it's hard to let someone else shoot a trophy like that but you made someone elses hunt of a lifetime. I have a good buddy that let me shoot maybe the biggest deer off his farm (159" gross) and it may be the best deer I ever get to shoot and I will always remember it. Some nice ones in KY. Hunted there this weekend and shot a doe. Tried to get one for my boy but we ended up busted by a nanny.

Great story and great bucks. Congrats to both. My son (14) killed a nice buck with a 21" outside spread with his first shot ever from a muzzleloader. 202 yards with a 195 Barnes pushed by 14/54 of 110/322. Can't fig out how to post pics though.
