Wondering if anyone shooting duplex loads have ever tried putting powder stacked in 5ml vials for hunting situations? I always keep them separate when testing and bench shooting but in hunting situations when a backup load is needed would this work.? I know it's not ideal from Accuracy standpoint but is it safe and idoes it come close to same accuracy and POI? Sorry for all the questions just wanted to know if anybody has any experience? Thanks Tim

The powders will mix if put in the same vial any movement will mix it up. You need to put them into the gun one at a time just like at the bench. So if you mix your starter into the main charge you have lost your starter it will be like a single charge. So your POI will more than likely move as well not sure it will but it might.

In the past we have used 1) duplex ( fast booster powder first then slower powder ), 2) reverse duplex ( slower powder first then fast booster powder ), 3) and also mixed duplex ( should speak for itself ). 1) being generally the fastest and highest pressure, 3) mid range, 2) slowest and lowest. Since they do not react the same in the barrel you would need to tune each load independently. Mixed needs to be mixed uniformly to be consistent. IMO, when done consistently I doubt there is a right or wrong way to do it. edge.

Or as Richard has stated before, why not try to work up a single powder load that shoots to same point of aim as the duplex load. If you did need a follow up shot the gun would already be "warmed up" and should not misfire after the duplex load goes off. I am doing that with duplex 10-50 sr4759/h4198 and follow up shot 63gr h4198, and it works. This is for a saboted load though.

Jay Last year I carried duplex loads as follow up shots cause my primary load was a duplex. this year I am going with this plan this year.

I did a test couple weeks ago. 70 gr IMR 4198 Vs. 10 gr. 4759/60 gr. IMR 4198. With a 275 MH. Did not have a POI change between the two loads.

Savage Shooter developed the 4759/h4198 10/50 duplex because of temp instability with singles....Until cold weather testing ,how are you going to be sure the single that works in warm weather is going to produce the same poi in the cold....? even in a warmed up barrel.....

4198 was less than dependable for me. I'd rather take the duplex. Not a huge deal

I have taken 2 pieces of rifle brass taped together, 1 7 mag the other 223, with vacuum caps to keep them sealed up. They also work as a nice powder funnel. Pop the cap off the 223 pour in the 4759 flip it over pop the cap off pour 4198 seat the bullet

As far as a "right way or a wrong way?" When duplexing, if you want the intended results, there is only one way! Put the booster in first and then the main charge. If you reverse them or even thoroughly mix them, the results.............in say, a 2700 fps load will be the loss of about 100 fps. I have run that test a number of times. In a duplex you want the fast burning easy to ignite powder right in front of the vent hole to insure ignition under adverse conditions..........be it weather or a loose bore. Richard

As far as a "right way or a wrong way?" When duplexing, if you want the intended results, there is only one way! SNIP WHAT? I call BS as to a "right or wrong way"!!! So velocity is your ONLY criteria? That may be YOUR intended results but: 1) some people may be more interested in accuracy; 2) ease of use; 3) more complete/cleaner burn! If you do not care about accuracy then perhaps you are right or perhaps you have not properly tuned your load! Some folks shoot a particular load and find it accurate or sufficient in velocity. THEN they switch out one component and do not get the same or better result and state emphatically that the new component is wrong or bad. When changing loads you need to go back to the basics and work up your load from scratch. Perhaps you are allowed to shoot multiple deer at a time so speed is critical but you have ignition problems with straight loads, then mixed duplex might be the ticket to solve your problem. Just because 10/50 duplex works, perhaps mixed duplex might be 12 + 55 or 15+45, you need to experiment to find the sweet spot! There is so much that is NOT known about SML that it would fill volumes and anyone that states for a fact that one way is better is "blowing smoke" ...IMO edge.

This is an old target with the .50 at 200yds, mixed and stacked. Only one sample and who knows how it would react over multiple tests. I believe Edge is correct and a accurate load could probably be found with a "mix", but would take some bench time to test the theory.
