I know there are a lot of different conversions out there, but how do you convert say a 45-70 barrel or handirifle to smokeless? Is it just a matter of drilling a hole and tapping it with the 11/16x16 tap? I'm talking about using the savage breech plug here. Unfortunately in this case I'm from Canada and don't have the luxury of just shipping it off to someone in the states. Even buying a barrel would require me to get a FFL with shipping etc. it would add over $300 to the price. So can anyone tell me what I would have to explain to a machinist? My neighbour has a lathe, I'm not sure if he can cut threads or not though.

Cut the proper size hole to fit the tap. Make sure the tap is lined up straight and tap it while it is in the lathe and the tap is in the tale stock, The shoulder that the plug seals against is the most important part. Make sure it is square with the bore and the threads you are cutting. Jeff.

Member "Edge" has a blueprint of the plug and chamber. PM him and I'm sure he will give it to you.

Different strokes for different folks I would say you need some help from a machinist in your area. You need to bore a hole that is .500x a certain depth and then one that is .610x a shorter depth then have knowledge of internal threading to cut your threads. It's not quite as easy as drill and tap. I think deertroy just went through this in canada as well.

It would be practically impossible to cut the thread with a single point threading tool 2 inches deep with out getting chatter and run out. Plus you better be darn good with the half nut if you even try it. You will have much better results using a precision tap,,,and some good cutting oil. One that cost good money, not a $3.95 one you get from the local hardware store..

I have a print for him to use if you want to install my plug system in your barrel.. Its so easy a fifth grader could do it blind folded..... Just kidding... Jeff....
