Looking to buy a savage barrel, stainless .50 would be nice. I am not set on length or caliber, so shoot me a PM if you have something. I bought a pitted MLII and thought I might get it to shoot, but it shreds sabots even a low speeds. I assume I need a small shank barrel, but am unsure where exactly to measure to find out. Thanks. -Ateam

I COULD offer you a stainless factory .50, but you're not on my enemies list.

Ateam, I hope you got a very good deal on that rifle with pitted barrel. You stated that you are not set on caliber, so why not put a barrel on it that you will be very pleased with? A FEW on this board have gotten very good accuracy with the factory barrel. On occasion, so did I but it was never consistent.
For CF (or better) accuracy, get something like the .45 PacNor, and get tips from the pros here for getting it together and coming up with loads. Yes, the barrel is expensive, but so is putting hundreds of rounds out attempting to get a factory barrel to shoot accurately.
Going this route will give you a 90% better chance of being tickled pink with your rifle.
Good luck.

+1 a custom .45 is very user friendly ...since you are replacing ,upgrade in the process...

dannoboone, I payed 400 for it. The guy said it was pristine, and I had my brother pick it up (who doesn't know any better). Feel like I got shorted, but scat happens.

As far as the shank measurement, where is that taken? Do I need to take the barrel off to get it?

Since nobody has answered you on the shank size.... you will need a small shank. I gave away a darn good shooting .50 barrel when I converted to .45 on mine. A 45 barrel is for sure an option but I can also see value in sticking with a .50 if you intend to stay with sabots.

I'm amazed at folks bad mouthing Savage barrels, both my Savages were great shooter, I still have my Ball .50 from the first day 2004, it was a shooter still is. My first one holers was with 42gr. 5744, 250 and 300gr Horady XTP bullets

If you are going for the super long range MOA accuracy potential and extreme range hunting, I would go the .45 route. If you are Joe Common deer hunter rarely shooting over 150-200 yds, any Savage I've seen will do the job fine. 2 MOA is all you need for that. We have 6-7 stock savages between the guys at camp. All of us have pulled our hair out at times. The biggest revelation in the last 3-4 years was everyone turning to .458 bullets in BCR sabots. Specifically the 325 FTX shot with 68-70 gr H4198. Seems like everyones rifle likes this bullet/powder. Most shoot it well and a few shoot it incredibly well. (probably more related to differences in shooters skill rather then the gun.)
All depends on what your goals are.

Marty I too have had good shooters in the factory barrel BUT I have also had some I was very disappointed with. A guy brought me his to tinker with after not being able to do anything with it. I bedded it and added a third pillar and no matter what I shot in it 2" was the best it would do. the inside of the barrel looked like a washboard. I pulled the barrel and put on another factory take off and he was a happy camper with 1" five shot groups. some people have had nothing but great shooters and some not so good, having owned 10 or so I have had both. currently I own only my original starter Boat anchor but it wears an early Pacnor and it shoots great.
I too would spend the coins If I could and get a Pacnor and be a happy camper..
measure the shank directly against the barrel nut to see what size barrel you have..

I still have several Savage .50s. I never had any accuracy issues with them and would try it first before considering a change. Tar12 shot a boatload of deer with his before converting for various reasons.

The longest shot I have ever made here in northern MI was just outside 250 (an d that was a CF). I honestly don't see that distance growing any as finding a field that big is uncommon. I will gladly go to a 45 but don't have the cash to buy a new PN (I am 29 with a newborn and too many other responsibilities). Maybe someday I will build a new 45.

I wish I had one, I would give it to you but I don't, some of these guys will put you in a good barrel for a reasonable price..

Hillbill, Do you think the earlier barrels, were of better quality.
When I got my first Savage in 2001, the first time I try it, I couldn't hit the targets backboard, it was in the mid 90's. some hits keyholed My buddy that owns the camp [lease] had some Pyrodex, tried it and had a shooter. Got back home called Savage tech, was given Toby Bridges phone number, he spent over an hour talking to me, then fax'ed me 12 pages of info, and I was in business.
