I finally made it to the local gun club to shoot longer range. The road to the range was closed, as they wouldn't let anyone drive on it. To much mud and fine wet sand where there wasn't mud. A 4x4 would immediately get stuck in that stuff. This of course meant I had to carry everything 100 yards to the bench, making a couple trips walking in that mud. Next was hanging targets and walking again through that stuff. A little rough on an out of shape old boy.
More wind than was forecast also. Blowing from the target to the bench at about 30° and swirling. - Sustained wind........... 15 mph
- Gusts at.................... 22 mph
I placed one target at 200 yards to verify the turret, then walked down and stapled one at 400 yards. I shot the 200yd target and the turret was dead on. Once that was determined, I dialed the turret to 400yds.
Now for the very FIRST time and with gusts and swirling winds, I ended up with this target. Not bad for the first time from a "smoke belcher". I did realize though, I either need more adjustment on the trigger or, I need to replace it with a Basix or Jewell.
Now............ you smokeless guys take it easy on me please.

If that's your 400 yard target it's minute of deer for sure! Good trigger pullin regardless of what type of fuel you're burning.

Well after I posted that and after supper, I went down to the bench to clean the rifle. As I've stated before, that thing cleans (for a smoker) easier and faster than any other muzzleloader I've ever owned. Nothing but dust, 4 patches and you're done.
While cleaning it and putting protectant on the barrel, of course I removed the McMillan. Somehow..... when I was lubing it, I noticed something that felt lose. After further inspection, I found that the Leupold SD rear ring was lose at the base. I could actually move the scope side to side! What the heck! So everyone knows what happens next after I tightened them.......
That base and ring system will be changed this weekend to the Leupold QR Cross Lock system.
Knowing that the scope ring was lose at the base, enough to move the scope by hand, I figure that target wasn't that bad for a "smoker".
