Well after months of reading posts and making posts, I decided on a new rifle. I purchased a Remington 700 CDL DM chambered in 7mm-08. It has the features I want like a 24" barrel and a detachable magazine, those are the two big ones. Been hearing a lot of people are not happy with the new Remington's so I hope that I have not made a mistake. Ordered it a week ago Sunday so hopefully it will come in next week. I'm looking to top it with a Leupold VX-6 2-12x42 on warne QR mounts and rings.

I got a 700 recently and am satisfied except for the trigger. Now I found there is a recall on many of the triggers on rifles built in the last 6 or 8 years. You might have to send it back for that item or see if it can be corrected before you get it or go to an aftermarket trigger.

The 7mm-08 is a great cartridge, even better if you reload. I like Warne bases & rings too, solid quality at a reasonable price.
I have several Remingtons, one has a Timney trigger, another a Shilen. One does have a factory trigger, tuned up. I wouldn't spend to much effort with the factory trigger, Timney is an easy choice for upgrade.

I have been wondering about the trigger since there is a recall on them right now. I still have not received mine yet so I do not know if it is included in the recall. That also might be why it has not come in too not sure going to call later and find out what I can since its been three weeks since I ordered it.

What I've heard about the X-Mark Pro trigger problems was that they got a little carried away with the sealant on I believe the sear screw on a few rifles. It may have ran down into the spring itself.

Well a month after placing the order, I have not received or heard from my dealer. I placed a call Wednesday and was called back Thursday with bad news. My gun was affected by the recall and at this time Remington is not making any new guns. I was given the option of a refund or wait, so I'm going to wait another month and if I can not get a delivery date then take the refund and go another route.

If barrel length can be 22" (which is plenty in a 7mm-08) and you want a DM take a look at Tikka. They are hands down the best dollar value in rifles (they are no longer cheap but are inexpensive) and I have never shot one that was not fantastic. I am a huge fan of the Remington 700 but I have been a huge Tikka proponent since I started selling guns back in the late '90s.

Well I was making my barrel length decision based on the fact that I had a Remington 700 ADL chambered in 243 that had a 24" barrel and it was way more accurate than my current 243 which is a Savage 110 pre accutrigger with a 22" barrel. The DM is not a deal breaker I have been looking at the Vanguard S2 (RC) model which has a floor plate but the barrel is 24".

I don't feel like that is necessarily a good way to choose barrel length but to each their own. The Vanguard is one of the most underated guns out there too. If you ever choose to rebarrel it their are already some features their folks will try to talk you into installing in a Rem700. I personally wouldn't pay the extra money for the RC version because most of them shoot that good and you can restock a standard Vanguard for less than the RC costs. A Tikka can be restocked in a BC stock too for less and will likely be scary precise.

Taking into consideration your thoughts and you seem to be a person that knows their stuff. Maybe I'm being to hard on my old savage since it will put five shots into a 1 inch square at 100 yds. (Winchester 100 gr. Power Points) and will touch three Nosler 55 gr. HP. Sounds like I'm about to scrap the whole purchase and start over. A 260 Rem was my first choice but since I could not find one in the configuration of a 24" barrel and a DM, I went with the 7mm-08. Weatherby does not offer a 260 Rem, however Tikka does do I go with the Tikka in 260 Rem or a Vanguard in 7mm-08? In an afterthought the option of a DM is not that big of a deal however it is a nice option.

No flies on either cartridge. I really like 7mms for hunting but I like a bit more oomph than the 7mm-08 has. I think that case is nearly perfect for 6mm and 6.5mm though. I am strongly considering buying one of the new Tikka CTR rifles in .260Rem for practical matches.

I'm pretty sure that the place that I ordered my Remington from has a few Tikka's in stock so I could handle one. The Weatherby one the other hand could be a challenge to handle before committing to a purchase. I'm not a big fan of the checkering on the Hunter models either I would go more for the Forest it is more traditional looking. You don't feel that a 7mm Rem Mag is overkill for whitetails under 250 yds.? The paces I hunt have shots out to 350-400 that's why I'm looking to upgrade from the .243 (aside from giving it to my wife and putting a Boyds stock on it form her) Talked to a few people that have said at close range a 7mm Mag does a lot of meat damage.

I shoot 168-175gr bullets out of the .280 Improved 40° and the 7mm Rem Mag at 2700-2900fps which is what a 7mm-08 Rem gets for MV with a 140gr. I do not feel they do any more damage especially if you are shooting through the lungs instead of the shoulders. If you are concerned though get a .260 Rem or 7mm-08 Rem. Both kick less and you will probably enjoy shooting them more.

Well a second check with my dealer revealed that Remington will not be shipping new firearms until early fall. I'm going to cancel this order and go another route.
