A friend called me with a "problem" today and I could not answer him...even though I refered to my Nosler and Speer reloading manuals. Apparently, instead of grabbing CCI Large mag pistol primers he mistakenly grabbed rem 9 1/2 rifles primers, ...and reloaded his .44 Mag brass.
They fit and look normal. They Mic within .001 inch in dia and a few thousanths "deeper" then the pistol primers.
Question: If they seated OK will they fire? Is there any safety issue if they do? He's got 50 rounds loaded up.
Cross referencing in the reloading manuals shows that neither the .243 (which he uses his 9 1/2's for) or the .44 mag uses the same primer.
Any thoughts?

nosler 5th edition manual page # 35,4th paragraph-rifle primers contain a hotter primer compound than pistol primers& are made of a somewhat thicker metal. deprime slowly w/protective eyeware & most agree to de-activate the primer before doing so possibly soaked in water & or oil before doing so.

My 454 cassull can be loaded with either. I use the small rifle primer (CCI). No problems. However, it will cause a "hotter" load. Best bet, do as deadeye said.

Unless he has the rounds loaded up to near max i wouldn't hesitate to shoot them. Especially if they are going to be used in a Ruger. mike

I have vv reloading info which calls for the use of a small rifle primer in 357 their load data.
I agree that unless you are loading to max I would go ahead and use the rifle primed brass, especially in a ruger sbh

This would only cause a problem if they were max loads and if the do not seat deep enought so that they hang up on the fram and interfer with cylinder rotation. They are hotter and made of thicker metel so you need a strong hammer drop.

The uspsa guys have been using small rifle primers in the 38 super for years. The heavier construction of the primer helps with the full house loads they shoot to make the major power factor. Just need to make sure you get a good hammer strike.

Thanks guys. Sounds like he can shoot them. They are not max loads.
