Brother and I drew a "park hunt" at Kiptopeke State Park here in VA. It's a "earn a buck" situation with a doe kill required before shooting antlered deer. Well brother watched 3 bucks walk by w/o a doe in sight. Afternoon the deer finally started moving and at 2pm I got a "doe" and was on the lookout for the big boy. Didn't see him but got another cow mammy doe at 4pm. Brother got a doe too but the bucks disappeared. Lookout next hunt have a repeat for the 5 of December and already have the doe down. Well the 1st doe turned out to be a buck so small didn't even have buttons. It was smallest deer of the 2 day ML hunt, 30 lb field dressed. My big doe was a whopper, 108 lb field dressed and the biggest doe of the ML hunt. I was shooting my "built" MLII, blue action and SS barrel, and a load of 38 grains of 4759 and dark blue 40X50 sabot over mag sub base, knurled 200 SST, and Federal 209 primer. Both shots were right on 45 yards and the small deer was DRT and the big deer went about 15 yards. Great performance from the SST. For the 2 day hunt we had the second day zone 5. The total bag was 20 deer. There were a total of 17 hunters a day for 34 total hunters over 2 days. Someday I'll learn how to post pix but that is all for now. And the deer were on DPOP tags and didn't count on regular tags.
Kiptopeake is an interesting place to hunt. Historic area and on land originally a kings grant to one of my ancestors in the early 1600s. It a nice place to vacation and has a good campground and great fishing with the access to Chesapeake Bay and the bridge tunnel and barrier islands close by.
