Got drawn for an Indiana State Park hunt on Nov 18 & 19 (Potato Creek 3200 acres, 160 hunters). Able to take 3 does or 1 buck and 2 does. Shot a nice buck at first light on edge of a swamp with my 357 Maximum TC Encore rifle, waited 2 hours to track him. Followed blood right between two other hunters and blood quit. Neither guy knew anything, but we think someone grabbed the deer. We didn't track right off the bat because of heavy deer movement initially and not knowing other hunters were that close. It happens. Just hope someone enjoys it. Kind of ticked at that point so we moved my ladder stand to a hardwood ridge overlooking several other ridges and ravines. Nothing else seen Monday but the wind was still flying from Sundays storms. Tuesday morning was 27 deg and dead still. Decided I would be happy with a one shot opportunity so I took the Savage 50. Leaves were dry and crunchy. I could hear squirrels 100+ yds away. Had a doe sneak up from behind and caught me off guard. By the time I got turned around she was 30yds and heard me I guess. She took off instantly. I figured I blew my chance for the hunt. Not a few minutes later I see a big doe at 100yds on the edge of a thicket. I got all shook up waiting for an opening to shoot thru. I finally pulled the trigger and saw her high kick. Heard her run for 5 sec then quiet. This time decided to go check n 10 min. Had to cross a ravine to get to her, but she only went 20yds. YES! Walked out the long way around to avoid the ravine and when I was in line with my stand, shots started ringing all around. I got back in the stand quick and waited. I can see about 200yds and 4 or 5 ridges. Seen a few deer but nothing would stop long enough for a shot. Many idiots just unload their shotguns on any deer they see, but I wait for a sure shot. Then I heard a deer to my left and when I turned around a half rack 8 pointer was 30 yds and closing. I was mouth grunting then yelling but he wouldn't stop. I shot him on the trot at 15yd. He fell down in the ravine and rolled to a stop. I was so excited. I decided at that point to call it quits for the day with the deer retrieval ahead and taking down stands. I called my bud and he wrapped up his day and came to help me. We did pretty good on our hunt, my 2 and he got one doe on Mon. Happy to use my Savage to harvest deer. Load was 60gr N120, the mighty BO in a black crush rib sabot, lit by a ccim primer. Had a great time! Thanks, Jay.
