Thanks for the all the compliments guys. I still owe you story, but I'm still trying to dig out from under the workload from being gone for a week and a half.
Even though I got out of the mountains on Thursday, I couldn't leave Cody until Saturday because of the blizzard. Talked to another hunter in camp, and I guess they weren't really able to hunt at all after I left camp because of the snow. So I definitely did the right thing dropping the hammer on this one first day.

I for the life of me have no idea why after the process of butchering a downed elk without gutting has become common knowledge YEARS ago, except on extremely rare occasions why ANYONE still guts a elk. My friends and I learned of this method while researching our first DIY elk hunts over 20 years ago, tried it on our first elk hunt and have been hooked ever since. And yes this method you still get the tender loins out. For that matter why on earth does anyone still pack out bone when having killed even a deer let alone a elk. My friends and I only pack out meat, horns and or capes, bone is basically useless why on earth break your back hauling it out?
I'd give credit to the author from who's book I read of how to do step by step his gut-less elk DE-boning method, but I for the life of me can not recall his name, they are two well known brothers who are well respected authorities on elk hunting, IIRC that live in Utah. The Ulmer brothers maybe?

OH, forgot, congrats on the bull, love WY for hunting, would've moved there after my first elk hunt back in 2003 if wife would not leave me, and even then, it's only my children keeping me where I am at present. Don't get me wrong gotta good wife, but my love of the mountains, wide open spaces and hunting is second only to my sons and you only have one life time and it's a bruttaly short one at that. Have spent a goodly amount of time in 40 of the lower 48 states and have never met nicer people than I met while hunting in WY, and IMHO, WY is THE most hunter friendly state in the USA. Even the DNR officers I met while there were genuinely friendly, good people.
