This might sound trivial, but I have a feral cat, no collar and mange, hanging around. It's getting into the trash. I leave no food out. I live in a semi-rural area, and there is no prohibition on shooting. I want to dispatch the beast as humanely as possible. My thoughts are a .22 to the head. My wife says no. She says it is against the law and I could get jail time if I do. I find this hard to believe. I say it is one more predator in the Eco-system that mother nature has not made provisions for.
What do you think?

If I had doubts I would call pest control and ask for advice. Going against the advice of wife is two degrees more harmful than a felon. Of course if I caught her out shoppig I would shoot and dispose of the cat. If you don't get caught there will be no jail time.

IIRC, NJ games rules used to mandate that if you were hunting and came across a cat with dead game that you were to shoot it! I think that that cat of your is eating a rabbit Check your laws first. While you may not go to jail, anti hunters would have a field day.....and most importantly you might loose you hunting privileges if caught! edge.

IMO call animal control or local humane society. tell them the problem and they will most likely trap it and make the determination on weather to put it down. if you have dogs and cats of your own CALL YOUR VET. keep your animals away from it and take precautions. mange is not nice but can be cured if caught early or even managed.

This is what is wrong with the American people now depending on the Government to make all decisions for them.Shoot the cat and tell no one.No collar, unhealthily and on your property.Use common sense.

im not asking the American government to make a decision on weather to put an animal down. i'm saying let the profesionals do it. have you seen at what point mange is curable? do you know his local laws? dont get caught? what if some one is watchin and he doesnt know about it an they take excepton. he could loose alot just to shoot a unhealthy cat. why give PETA any more ammunition. this is the type of thing they use. in a time of questionable gun laws we need to be carefull not to give the government any more reasons to restrict or take away our rights.
feral cats are very rare and are different from drop offs. it is most likely a cat some one didnt want and droped it off since it know to go to houses and garbage for food. a true feral cat stays away from humans and will hunt for its food in most cases.
also do you know the proper way to handle/ dispose of the animal so as to not get it your self or have it spread to other animals.

My first thought was to apply the three S rule. SHOOT, SHOVEL and SHUT UP. The last being the most important. Or gut shoot it so it dies in somebody else's yard . Then I thought about my neighbor. A farm boy moved to town an had a opossum running around the house. He took a hammer to it. Somebody saw what in their mind was a horrible act of brutality. End result community service.

Trap the cat, take it to closest PETA location, drop it off with a bow around its neck.

It depends on your neighbohood and the citizens attitude. Here where I live if an animal has a home it is not bothered. If it is a stray it soon seems to disappear. We don't have animal shelters or pet control agencies. It works just fine for us without them.

Good work. I'm sure if yotes and foxes could speak, you would get a thank you card. Within 48 hrs, that cat was probably pressed out into nice tightly wrapped little tootsie rolls interlaced with hair and placed on a few flat rocks. (Unless you buried him deeper theen 1 foot) Meow

I live in a unicorporated county township. I can fire the MLII on the 100 yard range behind the house and break no law. The city is creeping in on me from three directions and we have fought off those who would incorporate us and raise our taxes and give damm little in return.
My brother in law ,Tightwad , has one of those high power gamo rifles. IMO that thing is noisier than a 22. Sounds like you hit a pipe with a hammer. IMO a remington sub sonic 22 or a CB cap is quieter than that thing.
As far as neighbors in the city are concerned , I believe you can fire one shot anywhere and no one will be able to pin point it. People will think it was a back fire ,exploding paint can etc.Fire the second one ,you are going to be discovered.

I stays in the boonies too. There are shots nearby almost every day. Not as many as are heard here in town where I work though. The town shooters have more ammo and faster shooting guns!
I found that CB Longs are fairly quiet and do a good job on squirrels and cats inside 40 yards. I won't shoot a dog that has a collar, or looks like someone's pet. Those I try to trap and get back to the owner. I talked to the Sherrif about stray animals, and he said use my own judgement. We don't have an animal control officer or division out where we live. He said there is a legitimate concern about rabies from ferel animals as well as skunks, coons and possums. He prefers the 3-S method himself.
One certain thing,,, the next litter of whining pups the dog from across the road has under my storeroom, I'm going to trap her and take her home, FIXED!!
