Newbie to this forum so may be a dumb question. I have been shooting a savage for a long time now but it seems that every year I have trouble with the load that I shot the year before. The sabots dont seem to stay together in cold weather. Very poor preformance. I live in Missouri where it may be 70 deg one day and 20 the next. My last load that I thought was going to work was 200gr shockwave with a subase and 42 gr imr 4759 worked fine till temp in the 20s then threw them everywere till barrel warmed up. What does it take to go sabotless? Help!! Dave

I assume you are shooting a .50? The only 200gr shockwave I'm familiar with is .40 and best used in the .45s. You should be using .452 or .458 bullets and appropriate sabots. The .40s have too thick of a sabot for best results in a .50 with smokeless.

Yes it is a 50. I have tried many combinations of powders and bullets and sabots the 200 gr shockwave are the only ones that hold up for me but they take a subase under them or they blow a hole thru the bottem of the sabot. I have used this combo for 2 years on several different rifles works fine till cold weather sets in. My barrel has been lapped crowned and seems to be just fine. That is why I am thinking sabotless . Any thoughts on 40 cal.

Thor bullets might be the easiest route for sabotless. Other options would be .500 or slightly larger diameter bullets, depends on your bore diameter, and wads and files for knurling.

Does anyone have experince with 40 sabotless? Im not crazy about recoil and dont think you need over 200 gr bullets for deer. I would think about building a new rifle or rebarreling mine.

There are a few that have .40's and a couple waiting on barrels to shoot full formed sabotless. To get an idea of the velocities check out the .40 load database.
You could rebarrel the Savage to a .45 Pacnor or McGowen and shoot .400 bullets with sabots or .452 bullets sized sabotless. Just another option. Get in touch with Luke at smokelessmz.com and he can fix you right up.

Chuck41 and sw have .40s. There were some issues with bullet fit in those and Pacnor stopped providing them at least for a while. Like 45omega says, the .45 is a good option. It is more versatile because you can shoot it sabotless and you have a very high probability of it shooting sabots and 200gr bullets very well with modest recoil.

I have a .40 PacNor builit by RB. One of his last barrels. It shoots well with 200 SSTs and I use one of the recommended .40 loads. SW may have the most experience with the .40.

Welcome dj! Unless you build a really heavy rifle shooting bullets of 200+gr accurate out to 300 yds is just gonna rattle your teeth. .451 bore, sabotless and 250 to 325 gr bullets and a 15# rifle sounds like what you want. And get a wheelbarrow to carry that thing to the blind! just kidding, lol! Rebarrel on the MLII whould be really easy too. Just post your questions and use the search feature and you'll have the info you need pronto. Again welcome. 10 ga
