I have a 243 that hasn't been shot in yrs. I'm curious what it would take to convert it to a smokeless 45. What the cost may be. I want to keep cost down. Dave

I have 2 700 CF guns that cecil epp of precision rifle,www.prbullet.com, built for me and they shoot great. the other option is a petes breech plug with a pacnor barrel.Cecil charges 500.00 dollars to convert one and does 45 or 50 cal.

Cecil is in Canada. Were there any issues shipping your cf to or from him?

Welcome to the board Dave! About cheapest way to go SML is have Slufoot conversion of a H&R or other 45-70 single shot. Cost of gun, slufoot work and breechplug, shipping all for under $500 total. Unless you just rebarrel a MLII you can't do it any cheaper. Considering the current political atmosphere I would not ship my guns out of the country, you may not be able to get them back. Converting isn't all that difficult but a smith licensed and experienced with SML is what you need. $.02!! 10 ga

Yes,I agree shipping out of the country makes me nervous in this political climate.

Why not just order the barrel and breech plug from Cecil and make up your own cut down brass yourself and you wont have to send him anything out of the country.

Why not just order the barrel and breech plug from Cecil and make up your own cut down brass yourself and you wont have to send him anything out of the country. I was thinking the same, all rem 700's actions are not exactly the same (they are within a few .001" but not exactly identical), but for a barrel with no iron sights you could just change the recoil lug thickness to make it all work if need be.

I would think there is a reason Cecil needs the action sent to him.

I would think there is a reason Cecil needs the action sent to him. None I can see. I would hesitate to fit and chamber a bbl for brass ctg without having the action in hand, but if you wanted one for a ML and I was certain I had made it clear you might have to tune the recoil lug thickness to make it perfect, there is no safety issue. One could make shims for the recoil lug actually. Excessive headspace on a cartridge gun is a huge issue....but there is no such safety related thing in a ML. Bill

I'm intrigued. When I collect enough funds for this project I will contact Cecil. Dave

If you can remove and replace the barrel you can do it. I bought one several years ago and did not send my action. Just order the barrel if that is what you want. But the last thing I knew was all he has is 1-28 twist.
