First off I would like to thank Luke and Slufoot for helping me with my conversion. I was able to quickly get my breech plug from Luke and after a little delay on my part I was able to send the barrel along with the breech plug to Slufoot! Then a week and a half later here she is!!! I had an Optima Elite 45-70 converted and Slufoot had never done one. However the barrel is basically the same as an Encore so Slufoot had no troubles converting it for me! He and Luke have a great turn around rate and would recommend them to anyone. After I have gotten to shoot this one for a while I might have another one done and these two guys will be my first place to go! Thanks a lot guys!!! Oh and by the way I am gonna call her "AT&T" (Reach out and touch someone!) ;D Breech Plug

P.S. trim those toenails. I noticed that after I posted the pix! Guess I will have to get to that since your not the only one noticing that my wife pointed that out the other day also! One quick question what would be the max amount of powder someone would use on a 45-70. I am going to start with IMR SR-4759 since this is one of the powders Slufoot recommended. I would like to know the max so I don't have any issues. Thanks, River Rat

I've shot from 30 to 38 gr of the 4759 under smooth blue sabots and 200 gr bullets in my encore conversion and that is ok in my gun. Check out the load data and pressure traces. Seems that there was some with 4759 as single powder in a 45 bbl. Max loads are not always be the most accurate and accuracy trumps everything else. 10 ga

IMO I would get use to the gun by shooting 55-56gr H or IMR4198. Been alot of 45-70 conversions that like that load with SST's, Barnes and XTP's in a smooth Harvester blue. With this heat though definitely let the barrel cool between shots.

Thanks! River Rat

30-38gr of 4759 in the plastic jug is still well under max. The older metal can 4759 would likely be near a comfortable max.

I shoot up to 42gr of IMR sr4759 with a xtp200gr bullet in a harvester smooth blue sabot and its very accurate in my Bergara 45-70 conversion.
