I have a friend with a 3-9x33 vx-ll he wants to sell. How does it compare to the same scope in 40mm for light gathering, or low light conditions?

I have a friend with a 3-9x33 vx-ll he wants to sell. How does it compare to the same scope in 40mm for light gathering, or low light conditions? I did some comparison testing in low light a few years ago. The two test scopes were 1.75 x 6 x33 Leupold VIII and a 3.5x10 x40mm VIII For the purpose of my testing I set both of them on 4x which is generally where I set all of my vari power scopes when big game hunting. The first test was a open field test. My "target" that I focused on was a small branch overhanging the field at 100 yards. The 33mm OBJ scope did really well in this test. With the 40 MM I was able to make out details in the branch about 2 min longer than the 33mm. The second test was in a heavily wooded area. Again a branch at 30 yards was the 'target" I was able to make out details on the branch a bit long with the 40mm to the tune of about 5 min longer My conclusion was that both scopes on big game animals during legal hunting hours will do really well considering that my test was well after the legal shooting hours. The 33mm bells to me are a specialty scope. They are really nice for quick handling and when weight reduction is a must. I really like them but the majority of my MLS are based around the 40 MM objective. I would say if your getting a GREAT deal on the 33mm then by all means get it. You will not really notice the difference. But if I had my preference I would get the 40 mm. Good luck.
