Went for a walk after work looking for dusty woodchucks. Got 3 shots. 1st one at 130 yds. Held on backline and allowed 5-6 inches for the breeze and squeeeeezed. Thunk. Rolled him on his back, apparently dead. Kepy walking the feild perimeter and found another. Couldn't get closer then 180 yds so I lined up and allowed about 1 1/2 feet of drop but nothing for the breeze. Put shot #1 in front of his nose and sent him running. Reloaded. Wait. wait wait. Here he comes agian...asking for more. Same elevation hold and about a foot for wind. Bang. Sent him up in the air. Came down in a rolling ball of fur and feet. Regained himself and limped into the hedgerow. I couldn't check the spot without crossing a deep drainage so not sure if I nicked him or just scared the jeepers out of him. Circling around I checked on #1. Although I heard the bullet hit, saw him crumple and lay there...no sign of him. No blood...nothing. Went to the position of where I fired from to get a fix on exactly where the hole was and went back up there. Nothing. Strange.
The load was 30 Gr 5744 and a 185 gr XTP which is slowly building a track record as one of my best light loads I've ever tried. It is slow and ugly and the wind factor is huge. It also falls from the sky like a brick after 100 yds. However, I'm still going to stick with this load and score with it eventually.

Shot another chuck last night at about 100 yds with a different bullet. Screwbolts 335 gr LBT style flatpoint cast. Same powder charge of 30 gr AA5744. Right behind the shoulder. DRT of course. Pinhole going in and out. Huge crater in the dirt behind him. Grazed another at 110 yds. Both shots were off sticks walking in a rolling feild.
This load is very accurate in an MMP HPH12. Easily hits a small rusty tire rim at 200 yds everytime. AND puts holes in it! The 185 XTP's splatter on this rim and makes itty bitty dents.

Well, Ozarks gun is all set for the summer. 2 loads worked up.
Got my original Savage out and decided to get this one ready for chucks too. I had a dilema...I am almost out of MMP shorts and HPH12's (300 on the way)
However, I have a few hundred EZ load versions that I have aquired from other sources over the years. I also have a pile of 4759.
On a whim, I tried 40 gr of 4759 and a .451 200 XTP (the 30 gr charges gave really good and so-so results in the other gun...and my 5744 is dangerously low in qty for the other gun)
After getting dialed close at 100 yds, I shot a 2 inch group. I moved the group over and down a little and printed another 2 inch group about 1 inch high above the bull.
I was surprised that the loads shot good at all. My original gun has a QLA and these EZ load sabots fall into it and require very, very little loading pressure going down the barrel. Probably need these book powders for reliable ignition.
I have been pleasantly surprised to find decent accuracy in these 2 guns using light charges.

Did you do an autopsy on the chuck to find out what damage was inside? Ken

No. However, I will assume that the vitals were crossed and that some shoulder damage was done.
My autopsies on woodchucks are quick. Look at where it went in and where it went out.
I will try the hardcasts at some higher speeds sometime in the future and see if it splatters them (the woodchucks) with a little more speed. Those bullets will go through a wolly mammoth.

Yesterday I went out with my Savage loaded with 70 gr H4198 and Rem 300 .457's in BCR's. 1st shot was 135 yds and I nicked him enough that he stayed out squirming around. Snuck a little closer and turned him inside out at 80 yds. All from prone off the bipod.
Next one was at 70 yds...broadside on top of his mound. At the shot (shooting off sticks) my left hand turned numb. Something happened with the way I had gripped the stick and the forearm and the recoil put a pinch on the top knuckle of my index fingar. A little blood was involved. However, the woodchuck was hollowed out from the neck to his hams. The proper saying would be, "it wasn't pretty". But I'm not proper when it comes to woodchucks and I thought he looked GREAT!

I'm hoping to take my first with a T/C Triumph, hopefully this week. If I do I'll drop in here and let you know. As over run with chucks as we usually are, I'm having a difficult time finding a target! Good shooting! I think chucks are under-rated as a game animal! Have a great day! Dave

I nailed 6 groundhogs here in Ohio yesterday with my 25-06AI the 3 longest shots were a lase-red 600 yards a 533 and a 430 yards. Now tomorrow morning I am going to try and get one with the my 45 cal muzz I will be carrying a ruger Mark 2 pistol in case they form an organized assault and charge while I am reloading.

Well I couldent find a hog in the right position to justify launching a barnes bx at. I did manage to kill one with the pistol at 20 yards a CCI to the noggin did a fine job. The groundhog trip was worthwile it made me realize just how much I needed a place to carry my ramrod so I finally got around to ordering the the barrel band from a remington model 700 ml from brownells. 28.00$ for the band the screw and the shipping ouch.
