Finally broke ShowGirl in ,my Hill Bill Special 700 Pacington,
Last day of gun season.
I had found a section on Eglin Air Force Base that was closed last year. I hunted it hard all season, saw numerous does and small bucks but no shooters. This area was also an area that requires legal bucks have at least 3 points on one side 1 inch long. Anyway, I let my two friends in on the area and on the second to last day of gun season they both killed bucks.
One was a 6 pointer with a broken off right side, the other about a 16" spread eight pointer.
I saw some does and coyotes and was happy for my buddies,
but was down about my hunting luck.
Well other hunters saw the two bucks and new what section they were hunting in and I could see what it was going to be like the next morning, it was going to be a cluster Fudge the last day of the season.
I was wore out and feeling disgusted on how things were playing out for the last day, I got a call from my friends at 330AM
to see if I was going and told them I was going to another area that I have killed in the past.
I slept in to about 800AM and went to Eglin. I rode around to see where everyone else was hunting and noticed nobody was hunting the HillTop areas, my friends both killed their deer up on
the hills the prior day.
So off I went and setup at around 11AM. I sat for about thirty minutes and pulled out my can call and made it purr one time and followed it up with a short grunt.
About five minutes later I looked behind me and saw a nice cowhorn looking for my can call, lol. He was in thick cover with no shot available but he kept coming and ended up 8 yds. behind me.
I pushed my safety and shouldered my gun and my butler creek scope covers were still closed,.. I immediately flipped them open using two hands so they wouldnt make noise and thats when he stepped out for an open shot.
I put the crosshairs at the front shoulder at the bottom of his neck and fired a 200sst.backed with 60gns4198. He flipped completely backwards and fell to ground and flopped. It was HIGH NOON for me so to speak.
He wasn't a stud but a season saver. We have a two buck per DAY limit down in florida so I knew I might could double up.
I got down loaded him up and drove around for awhile and checked to see what the creek hunters had killed that morning
they had killed a couple of bucks. I started talking muzzleloaders with this guy and he told me he had missed a nice one that morning with his. I showed him showgirl and told him about the monster I missed two years ago with my CVA "POS".
I told him about the section that that big one was in, but I had heard someone shot him but never found him.
The guy looked at me and told me he IS still alive, he saw him last year in that same section but could not get a shot at him on the last day of season.
Feb 11 through the 19th will be primitive weapons season and my BUTT will be hunting his A$$ the entire time and introduce him to SHOWGIRL and a 200sst.
Theres more to this story but I'm wore out typing , but I'm glad I could post a smokeless success story finally.
Take care guys, I love this place.............................
