How is the factory savage ramrod intended to be used?? it is threaded on both ends however neither end looks suitable for bullet seating, I bought a folding t handle from cabelas to fit on one end of the rod however the other end is belled, what sort of seating jag is supposed to be used?? I was assume it would need to be a thin one so as to be able to fit inside the stock. what sort of setup did the factory intend to be used in the field.

the jag you use isnt going to fit in the holder, so just pull out it when you load the gun so you dont damage the bullet when you are loading. lots of people use a spin jag. i just use the cleaning end when using factory rod cause it has a taper to it.

cumminscowboy,
Whyohe is right you will not find a loading jag to fit in the stock ram rod holder. Will the folding T-handle fit in the holder of the stock. If it will that is fine then screw it into the end that is not bell shaped and push it down into the rod holder. However, when you are putting a loading jag onto your rod it sticks out quite a few inches from the barrel with the T-handle on the rod also. You don't want to hunt this way.
Therefore if you want to leave both a T-handle and a loading jag on the rod while installed in the rod holder with the bullet loading jag being out towards the end of the barrel screwed into the bell end of the rod. You have to cut down your rod or buy one that you can cut to the right size or is buil to the right size to keep everything on the rod while installed in the rod holder and line up with the end of the barrel.

to me the rod seems basically good for nothing, there is not reason to have both ends tapped, and no reason to bell out one end of it. who wants to jamb those threaded ends into the palm of their hand when they reload out in the field.

I agree with you cummins on the rod---It is pretty useless!! I've got a good range rod (knight) that I use even in the deer stand that works well for me. I know its something else to carry but it is solid and doesn't hurt your hand to use.

I find the Savage noodle rod to be quite useful as a loading tool, especially in the stand. I use it with a plastic short starter and insert the end into one of the holes in the round ball of the starter. Ball fits the hand and is carried easily in my bag with powder vials. Without using the starter it would be hard on a hand, but with it the rod works great. Does a great job of seating the flat ended XTPs and similar.
I modified mine by reducing diameter of the fat end to fit in my PacNor 40 with a belt sander. The threads work with my loading jag for pointed bullets and the rod fits in the holder under the barrel for carrying. I use my solid range rod with its "T" handle for cleaning, but the Savage noodle rod is what goes to the deer stand every time!

In cold weather on a fouled bore,it leaves a lot to be desired.
