Well this was another strange season. I have got to say 50 degree days for late season in Ohio was nice for sleeping in the woods! But just to warm for hunting. We did see a few does. didn't take any. didn't go for meat. strictly trophy hunting. We hunted Powelson wildlife area. very nice! few hunters. the terrain can be a real core to deal with. endless old strip mine spill banks. and the amount of oak trees that produced acorns was unreal. Between the farm ground with standing corn that surrounds Powelson and the feed and cover that is avaible for the deer they didn't have and need to move. Any day hunting is better than a day a work!

It sure beats working! Hunted all days except Sunday-toasty. Seen a mosquito and other bugs. How you like public land hunting? Been to Wolf Creek couple times and was not bad at all if stayed away from camping grounds (game wardens advice). Was warned by others of war zone with bullets flying everywhere. was not bad at all. Tell us more of your experience. I live in Columbus area and would like to try more public land. olegburn

I live in Pa. but like to hunt other states close by. Ohio is blessed with a ton of Public land to hunt. I have only looked at two places so far. Woodbury and Powelson. I liked Powelson better. Thats not to say certain places in Woodbury wouldn't be good, Its 19,000 acres.
Since you live farly close by these wildife areas you could spend the next 5 years checking them out and still really not cover all of them.
This is going to be my last late season hunt. The deer have been pressured to much. The big boys find a hole and crawl in it. Then for some crazy reason your bucks have a habit of dropping antlers early. It would be very upsetting to see a one horn giant.
Powelson has all the right feed and cover. the big problem is trying to navigate around the old strip mine pits. No problem for the deer. Sure is for the hunter. It is not a place you would want to walk into in the dark . Forget about a GPS it won't get you around the spill banks. There are some roads from the oil wells and the spill banks have some paths but they don't take you into the heart of Powelson. Anyway I had a good time.
