Linux ?

Since I keep seeing that menacing Penguin around, I assume that some folks use Linux.
I have an older laptop that has been wiped clean of an operating system. I know zero about Linux and am wondering if it makes sense to go that route.
It will mainly be for Internet, and some word precessing. Since the computer is wiped, do I load Windows at all, or burn a CD and load from there?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have used Linux at various times on a number of different computers with several different Linux distributions. The only ones I left in that configuration for significant lengths of time was for network servers. I found that Linux makes a better Windows server for small networks than Windows!! Unfortunately for my main computer I always found myself having to use Windows for a number of specific applications since the programs simply weren't available in the Linux format. As a result my main computer has always been Windows. If you have no operating system on the computer just loading from a Linux CD would be the easiest course. I found the Ubuntu (or Kbuntu) distributions to be the easiest to load and configure for me. There are also several excellent FREE word processing programs that are available on Linux. lifehacker.com/5170138/five-best-linux-distributionsI would assume that Buckrub is a regular user of Linux from his Avatar, maybe he will chime in here and steer you right.

Thanks for the information I'll take a look around at the various distributions first to see if I think that it will work for me. edge.

OH geez. Someone actually thought I had an operating brain.
Edge, I'm sorry. I know NOTHING about Linux. I've heard of it, I even own .256 shares of Red Hat stock (from Sharebuilder). But I wouldn't know the first thing about it.
I just love the avatar and it looks like me and I loved Linus....
sorry. Truly. I wish I could help, you've helped me so. Sorry, man.
